5.0 out of 5 stars "Baby can you dig your man? He's a righteous man.", October 7, 2008

This is a red alert to all fans of Stephen King and the comic book genre of entertainment. Now's your chance to hop onboard Marvel's revamped new series chronicling King's greatest epic novel, The Stand from the start and spare yourself the painful delays that go along with waiting for the trade paperbacks. This is simply one of the greatest stories ever told and even (or especially) if you've never read the novel then this should be considered a must-read title. Only a short chapter is told in this first issue, but the characterizations are interesting, the art is gorgeous, and the tone is pitch perfect so far. I am literally drooling awaiting the appearances of my favorite characters. If you can name at least one of them (not very hard), check this out. If you cannot, then you REALLY need to either buy in now, read the source material, or at least watch the impressive miniseries and wish you had later.

The story begins at a military base with a desperate man waking his family and fleeing with them in the middle of the night. He's got a bad cough. The car crashes into a gas station where a group of men are passing the day discussing current events. What they find inside is one of the most disturbing images I've ever seen in a comic book. Marvel is pulling no punches here; this is Stephen King-brand horror. We are introduced to a few of the other players and then treated to a few pages of character art with creator commentary before we're left out in the cold for another month. If it weren't Halloween season, I'd wish it was next month right now.

While the early Dark Tower books positioned the series as Stephen King's magnum-opus over decades, the final books were obviously rushed and largely fizzled. As a result, "The Stand" still stands as the single most potent and epic entry into the Pantheon of King classics. The insane ambition of the story was rewarded with nothing but out-of-the-park success. It involves dark political and social commentary, both hopeful and spiteful religious themes handled better than anywhere else in fiction, primal and very relevant human fears of extinction, and the ultimate battle of good versus evil where even the most wretched and twisted of misfits can be the ultimate instrument of God's will. The characters are unforgettable, the themes range from close to home and personal to massively epic and global and brings us the most likely and terrifying Apocalypse: one where the world ends not with a bang, but with a whimper.

I can't wait to experience my favorite King work again in yet another format. I absolutely love the art, I love the fact that they aren't hiding the more shocking and horrific aspects, and I love that this is going to give me something else to look forward to every month for a long time. All opposed......I didn't think so. Do yourself a big favor and hop onboard now to save yourself from missing out on a re-interpretation of a timeless classic.

"Seasons don't fear The Reaper; nor do the wind, the Sun, or the rain."

But for everything else: the end is nigh.

2.0 out of 5 stars good, but very limited. , September 10, 2008
When I read about the stand graphic novel I thought it would be cool. this was a comic book that encompassed the first 20 or so pages of the 1025 page novel. not what I expected, would not have purchased. I did notice a page size ad for s. kings new book and belive this limited release will either be later put into a graphic novel. Or is just marketing for s. kings new book...
