Stills is God,
By
This review is from: Stephen Stills & Manassas: Live (DVD)
If you dig Stephen Stills, you need this dvd. The sound quality is great, the graphics are killer, and the band flat out rips. Nasty setlist, not one weak track on the disc. Manassas rolls through side one of their debut album and Stills' performance makes you realize how incredible he really is. "Song of Love" into "Rock n Roll Crazies" is unreal. Totally underrated in my opinion.

a bit of a misnomer,
This review is from: Stephen Stills & Manassas: Live (DVD)
It was recorded "live" in a studio for a German television show that aired in 1972. The performance is only 36 minutes long, and some of the best tunes from the first Manassas album (esp. Johnny's Garden) are nowhere to be found here. But what did make it onto the DVD absolutely kills, and I only paid $5 for a gently used copy, so it's worth seeking out if you can get it cheaply. I actually prefer most of the performances on the DVD to the original studio versions of the same songs. Like everything else about this band, it's just a shame that there wasn't a more definitive live document to commemorate what was obviously one of the most talented rock outfits of the early 70s.

Looks like the re-release,

I looked up the German live recording which has long been available, and, in response to another poster's question, it looks like a re-release as the set list appears to be the same. Too bad as I would have enjoyed an additional performance from them.

A Classic Masterpiece,
By
This review is from: Stephen Stills & Manassas: Live (DVD)
"Stepehn Stills and Mannassas: Live" is a surprisingly refreshing piece of work. It is more of a live jam session rather than a concert. The result is an insiders' look at a truly classic rock band releasing its abundant creativity without the hype and distraction of the concert arena. Stills shines in this outstanding performance, demonstrating the full range of his electric guitar skills. This DVD also captures Stills at the peak of his vocal quality. The only thing this lacks is a demonstration of his powerful accoustic guitar mastery. That notwithstanding, this DVD is a must for any fan of "70's Rock.

Better than nothing....,

This review is from: Stephen Stills & Manassas: Live (DVD)
Hey guys, it mightn't be the best vision of "live" Stephen Stills/Manassas; viz. OK, it's "live" in a German TV studio rather than a live concert; but "God" isn't making any more footage of Stills/Manassas. Better to have 3 stars of something, than 5 stars of nothing....
Despite the great success of "law firms" C,S,N and C,S,N & Y, Stephen Stills peaked in Manassas.

Stephen Stills and Manassas,

Long Live Stephen Stills and Manassas! This DVD showcases the group enjoying themselves, especially Stephen, playing vintage Manassas's songs. For some of us who did not have an opportunity to see them live, this helped ease some of the pain.

Always a pleasure to see the obscure stuff out on DVD,

With all of the overproduced crap and modern performances from classic stars, it is always a pleasure to see the true performers in their prime. Hopefully DVD producers will continue to see that classic concerts and live TV performances are what fans want to see, not cheesy compilations or performances way past prime. While Stephen Stills is best known for his work with CSN, his fans continued to follow him through subsequent solo albums. His unique voice and extremely underrated guitar skills are a treat to see live. While these songs from Stills and Manassas are unknown to most and will never see airplay again, they are honest, well crafted, and give a rare glimpse of the talents of Stills and this talented backing band. The audio quality is very good and the atmosphere is relaxed. If you are a fan of Stills and CSN this DVD is well worth having.

very entertaining video of all time classic but short lived band. would have been 5 stars but a tad short and a little heavy in the midrange, but can be fixed with basic surround sound stereo. highly recommended always quick deliveries from amazon, thanks

Lost in translation....,

Although I really did enjoy the music and performance on thid DVD, it is definitely dated. Because of the sound quality and effects for this time period, this DVD lacks something for me. It was fun to watch, but like watching an old TV performance from the 60's, which is probably exactly what this is. However, you can't take away from the talents of Stephen Stills and they show in this performance.
