science fiction Steppe history [no spoilers],
By Oscar "DaRK KNighT" (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Steppe (Mass Market Paperback)
Alp, a great warrior of the Steppe, is unwillingly snatched at an opportune moment to the future of 2332 where history is reenacted in an intergalactic game to educate and entertain enthusiasts about the great nomadic tribes of the Asian empire. Alp must participate and hopes his knowledge of the accounts, people, and strategies of the era might help him score high enough to survive afterwards. From what I gather, the book is based on factual events of Asian history. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the education of the time period. The transition of past to future geography and technology is well thought out. The story moves extremely fast and can be mildly tricky to follow when the history lessons happen. Good action story combined with romance and suspense make "Steppe" an enjoyable read. Thank you.

Historic Magic!!!!!,
By Joseph Kerr "thebalrog99" (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Steppe (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is easily findable at used book stores so don't worry about finding it here on amazon. Never before or probably again will I read a book quite like this one. This book is real world history intricatly and intelligently weaved into a future landscape. It cannot be fully explained just how well done this book is. Even if you don't like science fiction and you don't like history. You will still marvel at the skill involved in this book. You will laugh at yourself because you will feel as if you've been tricked into reading a history lesson. But it feels nothing like that. This book is where Anthony truly shines because it took intelligence and a great artistic mind to write this novel. This book is Great!!!!!!!!

Steppe By Piers Anthony,
By Alexander Lathrop (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Steppe (Paperback)
This is one of my favorite books because after I finnished it and read the end notes I was facinated with the background. This is a sci-fi recreation of a historical figures life. Just a caution don't try to find out ahead of time who it is just read and then try to see if you can figure out who just from the story (it is accurate in a strange way). This is also a great way to get people who like sci-fi into history or to get a history buff into sci-fi.

Classis Piers Anthony,
By
This review is from: Steppe (Hardcover)
This is a very good, classic Piers Anthony tale. Unlike much of the more formulaic stories he has told over the past 15 to 20 years, this story is very original and very good. Not to say that I have not read everything he has put out over the past 20 years, but this book stands far above just about anything he has done in recent years. If you liked the storytelling he did in the Incarnations series, with his rye wit and deeply sarcastic humor toward modern society, then you should pick up this book.
I wish he still wrote tales like this. But I understand that he also has to write what will sell and make him money. If you have never read this, get a copy and make up for lost time.

This review is from: Steppe (Mass Market Paperback)
If you can get your hands on the orginal copy, GO FOR IT. I can't tell you what he did in the new version. I read the orginal in 10th grade and got an A in history with out cracking a book. Great tale and if he didn't change it to much this one would have to be a ten, becuase the first was a 15.

Wide scale roleplaying,
By Blue Tyson "- Research Finished" (Legion clubhouse) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Steppe (Planet Stories (Paizo Publishing)) (Paperback)
An interesting story that is a precursor of work like Larry Niven's Dream Park, but on a bigger scale.
A very settled Galactic Society uses a live action roleplaying historical scenario as entertainment and an outlet for those that seek adventure. The game scale has compressed time to allow for different eras to be played out. Interestingly this Galactic society is displayed as largely post-literate, from a book from 1976. A group of players decides to gain an advantage by time travel - but snatching a Uigur man just about to die from the 800s to use his knowledge to tactical advantage. However, he is intelligent and cunning, and decides to use his knowledge for himself, getting into the game - as staying in Galactic society is better than being a dead Steppe dweller. So time for alliances, raids, etc. The other nice twist is that the game substitutes spaceships and stunners for the historical weaponry, so the scale is interstellar, while still talking about 'bows' and 'horses', and this actually works. And if you know a bit of your Asian nomad barbarian history, you might have some inkling of what is coming.inkling of what is coming. 3.5 out of 5

Anthony, tell us: whatever happened to these kind of books?,
By jackntim@erols.com (Washington DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Steppe (Mass Market Paperback)
An excellent story, and one from a period in which Anthony still had the ability to enable us to picture in our own minds the scenery of his stories, and to understand why the characters did the things they did. Anthony, if you read these, go back to the way you wrote when you wrote this enjoyable, unusual story.

This review is from: Steppe (Hardcover)
This is a historical-science fiction book by the author of the Xanth series. A 'fish out of water' story about an chieftan from the ninth century steppe is brough into the future at the moment of his (would be) death.
This novel tries to accuratly portray life during the age of Ghengis Kahn.
I found it interesting and memorable.
