Marie Sounds As Good As Ever!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Steppin' Stone (Audio CD)
The person who reviewed this album before me is entitled to his WAY OFF opinion, but I must disagree. "Steppin' Stone", the title cut, is a definite message to women saying, 'don't use me, get what you want and leave me, because I need more than that.' "What's In It For Me" is a touching song about a person who wants to let go of her heart but needs to know how her intended feels. It's a cute play on words with a truly feeling melody and Marie sings it innocently and sweetly. In "If You Think About It Call Me", you hear an upbeat true country song about lost love and wanting it back. The most moving song on the album has to be "Help Me Get Over You". It's about love gone bad and the need for closure. The reviewer above says these are Tanya's leftovers. Well, Tanya with her harsh, rustic voice, while great for certain songs, couldn't do these songs justice. Marie can sing Pop, Country, and Theatrical songs. Her voice is pure and true. She doesn't need the gimmicks and extreme stylistic reaches that other artists need to sound good. Purchase this album to hear Marie sing. We need more Marie Osmond albums. This country needs as much of Marie as it can get!

More Mellow,
By A Customer
This review is from: Steppin' Stone (Audio CD)
This cd that came out in the late '80s was a more mellow effort than the previous two. It even starts out with a ballad, "What Would You Do..." was the b-side of the first single off this cd, which happened to be the title song. I always thought that to be weird, since b-sides are supposed to be "weaker" songs. Why would they want a song not good enough to be the lead single to open an album. MMMM we're not off to a good start on this. The next song "Slowly but Surely" is an improvement over the first. It is a traditinal sounding country song, certainly more country than anything she had done in the '80s. Without going over each song, "If You Think About It" is a toe-tapping country-pop song that should have been a single. It's similar in the vein of "Theres No Stopping Your Heart" and "I Only Wanted You". THe last two songs "Love Speaks Louder Than Words" and "Let Me Be the First" should have been the two songs that open up the cd since, in my opinion, they are much much stronger songs. Again, they are up-beat and her vocals are pure Marie. I don't mean to be down on the slow songs on this cd, but they are not up to some of her others such as "I'll Be Faithful to You" or "More Than Dancing". Still check this one out. You can't miss with Marie.

Could have been better...,

Marie is the best, but this is one Osmond album I can't give 5 stars! It's too country for me. I love the pop songs from Marie. Although most of her "country" songs are fun and uplifting this selection is rather boring and unrememberable. "Steppin stone", "A too blue moon" & "Slowly but surely" are pretty good though. For $5.98, you can't complain too much!!

Marie Osmond has a beautiful voice, and this album is pleasing. Steppin' Stone was released in 1989. All ten of the songs are likeable. Also, the album sports a laid-back quality to it. My favorite songs are "What's a Little Love Between Friends," "A Too Blue Moon," and "Let Me Be the First." "What's a Little Love Between Friends" is a pretty one, while "A Too Blue Moon" has a nice refrain, and "Let Me Be the First" features smooth harmony vocals during the chorus. The CD is almost 35 minutes. The song lyrics are not included in the CD insert. Steppin' Stone is a recommendable piece of work.

Her 4th and Final Capitol Release of the 80's,

In 1989, the 4th MO CD was released with a more sophisticated original feel compared to her prior releases. The material is not as strong, but stands up to her prior efforts. The singles were Steppin' Stone (#70) reminiscent of her 90's hit Like A Hurricane, Slowly But Surely (#75) and Let Me Be The First. The lead song What Would You Do About You was a B side and then flipped for airlplay without great success. Perhaps they would have been better to release If You Think About It Call Me or Love Speaks Louder Than Worlds?

A misfire from Marie,
By A Customer
This review is from: Steppin' Stone (Audio CD)
This album doesn't work because Marie Osmond is essentially a pop singer who records country-pop, not a genunie country singer. But the production is twangy and Marie sings in an affected twang that isn't very convincing. This was her first (and only) album with Jerry Crutchfield, who worked with Tanya Tucker. Listening to this disc, it sounds like he's recording Marie with Tanya's leftovers. Skip this one.
