Giving voice to the broken and hope for us all,
By Amy Wallace "Dark Chocolate Suspense...action... (Atlanta, Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stepping Into Sunlight (Paperback)
After turning the last page of Stepping Into Sunlight, my heart was full, and I was reminded again that God does indeed use broken people to pour forth His grace.
Sharon Hinck gives voice to the broken and shows how beautiful we are in God's eyes. Penny Sullivan's journey of healing is real and poignant and a clarion call to those of us who have and haven't experienced mental illness. To those who intimately know Penny's journey, Sharon offers hope and lights a path of healing. To those who may not understand Penny or family and friends like her, Stepping Into Sunlight offers an inside look that I pray ignites compassion and care toward the hurting. Stepping Into Sunlight is not a manual for mental health, it's a beautiful story of one woman's journey that impacts all those around her in everyday amazing ways. It's a story to savor and ponder for weeks and months to come.

Stepping into Sunlight,
By Robin (Surprise, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stepping Into Sunlight (Paperback)
This book had me hooked from the first sentence. As someone who suffers from PTSD and panic attacks brought on by it, I could relate to the character of Penny in a way that I have never related to any fictional character before. I thought this book was beautifully written by someone who can truly understand what a person suffering with these afflictions goes through. Sharon Hinck truly has a gift for storytelling and this is my favorite book by her so far. The book was able to articulate things that I have experienced but have been unable to share. I had my husband read passages of it so that he could get an understanding of what I battle. It is a tale of hope for those of us who suffer and one a great insight for those who may not but either way, it is a beautiful story!

Touching and Encouraging,
By Cindy Thomson "Author and Family Historian" (OH, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stepping Into Sunlight (Paperback)
Author Sharon Hinck has penned a novel that will touch the hearts of everyone who reads it. Penny, the character who is struggling after witnessing a violent crime and trying to be strong for her husband who is deployed and her son who needs her, is not a super mom. She's just trying to hold life together. Sharon shows the real world of post traumatic stress syndrome and the slow healing. No sugar coating. But there is hope, and Penny finds it, by showing kindness to others, and by finally facing her own demons. Beautifully written. Highly recommended.
It took me only a few days to read this book. I was rooting for Penny and had to see her through her journey. A book I literally could not put down. Cindy Thomson, author of Brigid of Ireland Brigid of Ireland: A Historical Novel

Stepping into the Sunlight by Sharon Hinck
Penny Sullivan finds herself in a new neighborhood, her husband is deployed, and her support system not yet in place when she finds herself witnessing a shocking crime. Unable to leave her home even to purchase food for her young son she knows she has to get better, but how? She has her faith or does she? And if she has faith why can't she move forward? I can't remember the last time an author reached inside of me and pulled out my story. Hinck has done just that, while I've never been in a holdup I've been a prisoner of anxiety. I was on those pages with Penny Sullivan, holding hands with her praying she would be able to each step. I finished this book with a huge `take away.' God wants my best, even if my best is only the smallest thing I can do that day. I wish I had read this book four years ago. I'm finally coming out of my dark corners and I know this book, while a work of fiction has the power to heal. Thank you Sharon for writing it.

Best book of the year!,
This review is from: Stepping Into Sunlight (Paperback)
Sharon is an amazing author. This novel is different from the others I have read. Penny is suffering from PTSD after witnessing a violent crime. Along her road to healing Penny struggles to leave her home and be the mother her son needs while her husband is away in the military. The theme surrounds a young mother who feels God has left her during her struggles. This a one will stay on my Keep Shelf.

Blown Away!,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stepping Into Sunlight (Paperback)
This book is frankly Sharon's best to date -- and I adored her Restorer series! Stepping into Sunlight is a departure from her other books, but an absolutely gripping tale.
Penny is trying to pull her life back together after witnessing an event that leaves her with PTSD. To make matters worse, her husband has shipped out on his first tour of duty as a Navy chaplain. Penny is determined to get better on her own...but she can't. This book is the poignant tale of her journey back to wholeness. It will be much harder for me to tell people to just move on after getting inside Penny's head and experiencing the pains and joys. I was also challenged by Penny's project. It's one I'd like to make my own! This book is wonderful and has joined my keeper pile.

Stepping out of darkness,
By
This review is from: Stepping Into Sunlight (Paperback)
This book was a hit. Penny is a witness to a violent robbery. Her husband, son and her have just moved and her husband is away for three months, being a chaplain. What a time to be alone. Penny thinks at first her panic attacks are some sort of illness she has picked up. She can't go anywhere, she does everything online. However, you can't raise children online.
So what will she do? She starts Penny's Project, doing one nice thing for someone every day. She also stumbles on a few people along the way that help her with her PTSD. This book reminds us that we are not alone, that God is with us. Even when we have forgotten him. His grace and mercy are in abundance. This story is a brilliant piece of literary sunlight. I look forward to more by Ms. Hinck.

Stepping Into Sunlight,
This review is from: Stepping Into Sunlight (Paperback)
After witnessing a brutal robbery Penny Sullivan suffers from panic attacks and is sliding into depression. Her husband is gone for three weeks at sea, leaving her alone with their young son, Bryan. She tries to cope for her son's sake, but all too often she is unable to make even the smallest decisions. Knowing she has to try to get control of her life, Penny makes a plan. For one thing, she will try to do one good thing for someone each day, which means she has to leave her house and make contact with people. And she joins a support group who force her to face her fears and do something about them. Penny must work through a lot of challenges, but God is there, leading her through the shadows and back into the sunlight of love and acceptance. Sharon Hinck delves into her character, creating a woman her readers will identify with and cheer for.
Stepping Into Sunlight is something different for her, and she does it well.

Disappointed,
This review is from: Stepping Into Sunlight (Paperback)
I understand the need to write about the trama of being a witness to a crime and being alone in a new city. Yet, the story went on and on about the stress that the main character had to deal with. My question is: when she realized what was happening to her, why didn't she seek professional help to enable her to restore to her normal life and especially the life of her young son. I have empathy for the character, but it was about page 100+ in the book before she realized that she had to seek help. Then when she did, it was painfully slow in getting counseling. I was disappointed and thought that with therapy she would seek help from a pastor or even her neighbor...why did she keep such a secret from her husband and family?
