I'm a big fan of small combos and got into Diana Krall by accident. I first bought Love Scenes and fell in love with her voice and her piano arrangments. It was only natural to see where she came from so I bought her first album and can't stop listening to it. It's been a year since I got Steppin Out and I still cherish the tunes. Her arrangements are phenomenal and quite possibly the most beautiful song I've heard is track 10, 'Jimmie' a dedication to her father and her piano mentor.

Beautiful as beautiful can be.

This is Krall's first release. At this point, her playing took precedence over her singing; she simply hadn't yet become the world-famous vocal stylist she is now. Although I enjoy the later CD's, especially Live in Paris, this is the best example of Krall's piano style. It's fun, it's terrific trio work, and it isn't over produced. I wonder whether she would like to return to the piano trio work, and let go of super stardom?

There is a lot of soul inside this lady. Diana display some good, hard driving, funky piano playing. She's also a very good vocalist. Listen to the drive she gets into on her solo. Very good groove. Last but not least, she's accompagnied by a sensitive, supportive rhythm section : John Clayton on the bass and Jeff Hamilton on the drums.

I heard about Diana Krall accidentally, soon she became my favorite jazz singer and piano player... She is the best!! Great taste for the arrangements, great sounds for this really EXCELLENT CD!!!

As usual, Krall's like nobody else.
