5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated, September 16, 2003

Lari White's 1998 album STEPPING STONE mostly went unnoticed, even though it produced a top 20 country single, the title track. After the failure of this album, Lari lost her record deal and signed with an indie label and released an R&B album titled GREEN EYED SOUL which is available on her website. It's a shame this album did not do better for her career, because there's some great songs here. The album opens with "John Wayne Walking Away" which was a single but flopped badly, vocally she is on par on this track as she emotionally pleas for her lover to leave. The title track really caught my attention, it's very catchy and was the only hit of the album. "That's What You Do" is another catchy song. I really like her version of "Flies On The Butter (You Can't Go Home Again)" even better than the newer version done by the Judds on Wynonna's new album, there's just something in her voice that really resonates. Same goes for the ballad-duet with Toby Keith, their cover of Billy Ray Cyrus' "Only God Could Stop Me Loving You", I like their version the best, even better than the newly reduxed version by Emerson Drive. "On A Night Like This" should have been a single, it has hit written all over it, its a song LeAnn Rimes actually passed on. Ballads like "You Can't Take That" are emotional but not overpowering. "This Is Love" and "Take Me" are uptempos that are fun to listen to, the latter was also a single. She does a good cover of Toby Keith's "Tired", and closes the album with the emotional "Look Homeward Angel", which is a highlight. Overall a great album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lari's Shining Moment, March 13, 2002
This review is from: Stepping Stone (Audio CD)
STEPPING STONE is in my opinion, Lari White's most exciting and enjoyable album. The album ranges from contemporary country to traditional, with her own blend and style of country as well as gospel and catchy songs. The album opens with "John Wayne Walking Away", an endearing ballad about a relationship gone wrong, a choice between freedom or staying in the relationship, its a beautiful ballad which country radio failed to notice. Same goes for the title track, which is a positive, pick me up kind of song. "On A Night Like This" deserved to be a single, its a great uptempo song about falling in love and having a good time. Lari really shines with Toby Keith on the duet "Only God Could Stop Me Loving You", and she also does a great job on the cover of Toby's song "Tired". Other fun songs include "This Is Love" and "That's What You Do". "You Cant Go Home Again (Flies On The Butter" is a great song about remembering ones childhood and the good times, and how precious those times are. The album closes with a beautiful gospel song, "Look Homeward Angel". Overall STEPPING STONE failed to be a stepping stone in her career, but its one of her most endearing albums and should not be overlooked any further, do yourself a favor and give this one a chance!

Lari White has a great voice, and this album is certainly worthy of adding to your collection.
She charted 12 songs between 1993 to 1999.
The first 9 are on her "Best of Lari White" collection, and the last three are here.
1. "Stepping stones" b/w "Tired" was a top 20 hit in 1998.
2. "Take me", album cut only, no b-side, was a top 40 hit 1998.
3. "John wayne walking away", also an album cut only, no b-side. was a top 100 hit in 1999.
All of this is album is good country music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, August 28, 2000
This review is from: Stepping Stone (Audio CD)
Stepping Stone is Lari White's fourth studio album, her most promising one yet. The songs are fun, and it is pop country but the voice is amazing. Its also amazing, with a voice like that why she isn't big in country. You ask someone about Lari White most would just say who? because she is an underrated singer. If you want good music, you should get this album because the songs tell stories. Go out and get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lari White deserves more credit, March 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Stepping Stone (Audio CD)
Lari White is one of the most underrated country singers out there. Her voice is beautiful and her song writing is great. She left her former recording company becasue they wanted her to go more mainstream. However, she is true to herself. She refused and now has a new label. This album is one of the best I own. Her talent inspires me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lari returns with a winner..., September 15, 1998
This review is from: Stepping Stone (Audio CD)
Lari White returns on a new label with a solid collection of songs that highlight her strong delivery. The first single and title track boasts a great melody and strong vocals even though the lyrics are a little weak. The opening cut, "John Wayne Walking Away," begins with some beautiful guitar and gets the disc off to a great start. Other highlights include "Take Me" and "You Can't Go Home Again." Let's hope this one places Lari in the upper echelon of Nashville ladies.

4.0 out of 5 stars her best to date, August 23, 1998

Lari White has come a long way since her last release, "Wishes." She has graduated from the teen love stories to more mature songs on her latest album. The first cut, "John Wayne Walking Away" is the best opening song I've ever heard. From the Spanish flavored acoustic guitar opening to the powerful chorus. As the album flows through its 11 tracks, each song gets stronger, as if she's growing as a singer and songwriter through the years. By the time you reach "This Is Love" you're in love with the album. It's clearly Lari's best.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could've Been Better, January 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Stepping Stone (Audio CD)
Lari White's back with a new album on a new label. Everything seems to be going her way. After having a couple of hits, her former label RCA dropped her. Now, her fans should be pleased with her latest release.

It starts off with one of the best produced song to kick off the album, "John Wayne Walking Away." The Spanish guitar is an immediate hook. The title track reminds us of a country Shania Twain while the feel good, summer time lyrics of "That's What You Do" add a refreshing edge to the usual serious songs that dominate Nashville today. The country-pop "Take Me" is a wise choice for a single.

However, it does fall short of pure greatness with a few song choices. "You Can't Take That" has weak lyrics and it's been done----better. Her duet with Toby Keith sounds like the two are trying to outpower each other which sucks the emotion right out of the song. And the Deborah Allen written "On A Night Like This" has, again, weak lyrics.

Altogether, if Lari had just spent a little more time choosing her material, she would have one hell of a comeback album. Instead, she cranks out a typical, run of the mill country album that is full of cliches. This album is just exactly what it's named----a stepping stone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but coulda been better, July 19, 2000
This review is from: Stepping Stone (Audio CD)
I bought this CD because of the song "Take Me", which is probably the best song on the album. I think Lari White is a great singer - and I agree that she is underrated - but this album seemed "too much". I can't explain this exactly, but it just seems like she's trying to please everyone by the songs she chooses for this album. "On A Night Like This" is good, but the lyrics are too cliche - same with "That's What You Do". I also didn't see the point in the duet with Toby Keith "Only God Could Stop Me Loving You". I agree that they try to overpower each other - no emotion in this "love" song! I also didn't see the purpose behind "You Can't Go Home Again". The best songs on this album are "Take Me", "Stepping Stone", and "This Is Love" - which could have been a hit if it had been released as a single. As a piece of advice, listen to Lari on the radio - don't spend money on the actual CD.
