The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous is an incredible book. Since 1939 millions have read it to find a path to sobriety and more. One problem though is seeing all that this book has to offer, especially with the 12 step recovery process because it is written in the language of 1939.

After hundreds of hours in Big Book studies and sponsoring dozens of others through it's pages, This is offered as an explanation in today's language that will hopefully help you see more of what this process involves.

I welcome your feedback and look forward to the many promises this book holds for those of us who have used it, and those just beginning to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! November 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am also a recovering alcoholic in the suburban metro Detroit area. I was also blessed to have found a sponsor who studied the book with me and walked me through the steps. But, I was a relapsing dry dunk for many years before I met him and became willing enough to do the work. In the beginning, I was actually attending a meeting near my home for a couple months before I realized that the Big Book existed because nobody at the meeting had mentioned it. All of the meetings I attended at that time were just tables where several people took turns complaining about their jobs, wives, kids, politics, etc, then went home. As I said, I have been incredibly blessed to have found the sponsor I did, but the vast majority of alcoholics who want to recover may not be so lucky. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone in our program of AA - or any 12 step program. It can help you to an understanding of the steps that you may not have had before and, if you are ready and willing to do what it suggests, it can save you YEARS of pain & frustration... IF you follow it's suggestions. Well done, Anonymous Guest. Thank you so much for sharing this.

4.0 out of 5 stars great, not secular though November 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Always looking for plain language aa materials, this is really good. However if you are looking for a secular text, specifically in the area of a supernatural being or non-belief in one, this isn't the one. "There is a Loving Force out there that is intensely interested in helping you but He will not come into your life unless invited."

5.0 out of 5 stars Good job March 14, 2013

A well written layout of the program. Our slogan of keep it simple was kept in mind. Bill wrote for semi-brain dead drunks, not the semi-literate characters showing up today

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish this book were available in Hard Copy April 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved this read!
It provides insight into the steps for those who find the Big Book's aged writ difficult to understand. It's very helpful in that aspect...so much so, I wish I could find it in HARD COPY to share with friends and sponsees who don't own Kindles or Nooks.
I've searched and can't find the hard copy anywhere.
I believe it would be a good addition to personally held book study meetings, much like the ones my own sponsor holds for her family of sponsees (and others), where we read AA inspired books that carry helpful messages and tools for successful recovery. It would also be particularly helpful to use, AS A SPONSOR when working with a Newcomer, to assist with paraphrasing some of the Step information from the Big Book.

Thank you, Anonymous Guest, for writing this book. Let me know when you put it out in Hard Copy!!

More About the Author

I grew up in Detroit and Mount Clemens Michigan, and moved to Canada in my early teens. I had a difficult time due to years of abuse at the hands of foster homes and later by the Catholic Church.

People have said more than once I should write a life story, but I think writing about how to not only survive these types of tragedies but to actually be happy could prove more useful than just a life story of abuse.

The worst was spending 2 1/2 years in a school run by Christian Brothers that were abusing the kids in their care for over 20 years. There were well over a thousand reported cases on file. Once it was over I came out of there an angry and confused kid who turned to drugs and alcohol. I continually wound up in trouble with the law but only did small sentences accompanied with probation. It became much worse however and I eventually found myself facing a life sentence. It was then that I met a man from AA (who visited the jail) who advised I could recover from I was going through. Due to his intervention I was introduced to AA and avoided penitentiary.

It wasn't until I got sick enough after 4 years without a drink that I found a sponsor to take me through the 12 Steps of recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous.

I've been a member of AA now almost 32 years and it has done far more for me than just how to stay sober.

I met a wonderful Native Canadian man who was an amazing spiritual leader and teacher. As a direct result of his teachings and sponsorship through the 12 Steps I found my way to "The Great Spirit".

This began an amazing journey through the years that would take me across the country and help me to become far more than I was before I came to this spiritual program.

I've had the good fortune to have another chance at fatherhood as I lost my relationship to my first child because of not being there for her. However I became lucky enough to have a son. I have tried my best to be a father he can be proud to have, even though he may disagree with that statement once in a while :) He's the greatest blessing I have that I'm aware of today.

I've been wanting to share my experience, strength and hope for many years through the incredible mentors and examples I have been fortunate to know through these years. Unfortunately some of the hardest lessons were learned from those who died as a result of this horrid disease.

They go out and try the experiment again to prove they can drink like other people. I've learned that it's not the meetings that keep us sober, or the membership that "teaches" us how to stay away from that first drink. It is the recovery process through the 12 Steps!

It took a number of years for me to find the "Golden Key" to successful sobriety that I found hiding right in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous!

Now, staying sober is the easiest thing I do...

My writing may not be the best, but I guarantee you'll love what happens to you if you decide to follow the path I found through the recovery program of Alcoholics Anonymous..

I hope to be of service and help you on your journey!
