Fans of Golden Age television will remember Paul Picerni as one of the stars of the greatest of all crimebusting series, The Untouchables with Robert Stack. Movie fans might instantly associate him with the horror hit, House of Wax, in which he played the romantic lead - and in 3-D!

Steps to Stardom is the autobiography of Golden Age of Television star Paul Picerni, best known for his starring role in the crimebusting series "The Untouchables" with Robert Stack, as well as the romantic lead in the 3-D horror movie "House of Wax". Picerni applies his folksy, conversational style to bring to life what it was truly like to work with Hollywood legends from John Wayne and Errol Flynn to Burt Lancaster, Vincent Price, Charles Bronson and more. Steps to Stardom celebrates Picerni's sixty dedicated years in the acting profession, and includes a copious amount of vintage black-and-white photographs of Picerni's life and career. An index rounds out this behind-the-scenes "must read" for fans of Picerni's work.

This is one of the best biographies or autobiographies of an actor I've ever read. It is written in a highly interesting, entertaining and thorough manner. Paul Picerni was always one of my favorite character actors. I liked him especially in "The Young Philadelphians" and "The Untouchables." He was a high achiever(as was his brother- director and stunt man Charles Picerni), coming from modest beginnings. He served in combat in WW2. He writes in a clear and entertaining manner about both his professional and personal life. And he does the same thing about selected stars he worked with, including, for example, Errol Flynn, Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy, Telly Savalas (who became his best friend), Robert Stack, and Vincent Price. He gives all the ins and outs of how The Untouchables was made. He doesn't pull any punches and occasionally gives criticism of certain stars when he feels it is due. He even criticizes himself on occasion!

He gives advice to actors, and some of his advice can be applied effectively to other occupations as well. He was a very talented and likable man, a true professional in his craft, and a real family man. When I sent him a fan letter about a dozen years ago, he wrote back a detailed response. I wish I had had a chance to meet him. The book is definitely one movie fans of classic films should read; you will enjoy it substantially.

Format: Paperback
Written with the same charming style as he lived his life, Paul Picerni's autobiography is a veritable "Who's Who" of the acting industry in the post World War II era of studio change and the heyday of television. Paul is a marvelous character actor and a gracious man to know. He embodies the definition of the "actor's actor" with his cool, calm demeanor and gentle humor. The story of his life and his connections to many of the great actors in his nearly forty-year career is told with panache and exhuberance. I highly recommend Paul's story to anyone who is interested in a career in the acting industry: you could do far worse in choosing a role model, but will never do better. I will always cherish my memories of meeting him and his family nearly twenty years ago.
