My favorite album of the 80s!,

I never even saw King on MTV, but I did see the video for "Love and Pride" between films on HBO during the winter of '85. That was all it took to hook me. Let me tell you, that is NOT EVEN the best song on here! "Fish", "Trouble", "Won't You Hold My Hand Now" are ALL fabulous! What saddens me is that a year or so ago, CDNow offered this CD as an import for under $, then it was removed from inventory and now suddenly reappears for sale by someone seriously trying to take advantage of the situation. What a shame! Paul King was a founding member of Mungo Jerry, recording that classic "In the Summertime" (He's the one on bango/kazoo/harmonica). After leaving Mungo Jerry, he formed the groups "The King Earl Boogie Band", then later, "Reluctant Stereotypes" (a ska band). The band, "King" had 2 releases: "Steps In Time", and "Bitter Sweet". Paul King had 2 solo LPs as well, "Been In the Pen Too Long" (while still in Mungo Jerry), and 1987's "Joy", then spent some time playing Vee-Jay on MTV. In all his incarnations, he proves to be a brilliant and versatile writer/composer. These days, he works as a producer with other artists (such as Ludacris). It's safe to say that he is TRULY underated. "Steps In Time" is a masterpiece! It needs to be released again on CD!!!

An 80's Classic!,
By A Customer

King had one thing going for him - talent. If you think this is just another 80's New Wave album, you are mistaken. Just listen to the Fish reprise. Paul King's voice and piano show the backbone of all of his music. He was one of the first to blur the line between New Wave, dance, and rock. A must-have CD!

Time stepped in...and it's about Time!,

I first bought the cassette version of this cd back in 1986, and I wore it out from playing it so much in my car. Since it was a limited international release it was extremely hard to find another copy. Thank you Amazon! "Hold my hand now" and "Fools" still floor me. If you love the 80's, King might have been a one hit wonder in the US but his music was beyond it's time. The remixes are a special bonus to enjoy this musical party of beat and rythm. King, where are you???

Looking for an album that winds the clock bacwards into eigthies youth? This is the one! Back to a time when fashion was fun and everybody seemed to get a chance to sing their hearts out. King was no exception, This guy could wail!!! His lyrics are a perfect example of 80's style. I played this alblum over and over and over...well you get my point. ENJOY

Nostalgia de King en Bruselas,
By
This review is from: Steps In Time (Audio CD)

Like the other posters here, I WORE the cassette out on this album back in the 80's ( my walkman too ). I think I bought it 3 different times. Definately a desert island disk for me ... I grew to really love the diversity of this album. The singles were infectious and groovy, but I think some of the best songs on here are the slower and beautiful melodies like Fools, Classic Strangers, and the reprise of Fish. Gotta love the the bonus remixes they threw on the CD ... that is the lucky few of us who have the CD. Damn hard and expensive to find these days. This CD is a perfect example of the question "who are these guys and why weren't they bigger?"

KING and for some reason my brain won't shut off!,

Paul King is brilliant, I bought the CD Steps in Time for the 2nd time. I had this album on tape and wore the crap out of it. There is just something to say about this album. KING was a brilliant perfomer, and one of those 80's bands that was too goo for his time. I remember playing this tape in my walkmen "YES" walkmen over and over. It's hard to believe that I use to listen to this coming from a small town. But It's was way ahead of it's time for us people living in a small town when only a few of us had big heaping Satellites that played MTV. This album is almost like a part or story to my life mainly because all of my memories still are because of the music I listened to in the 80's. I am just glad you can still find this on CD. It has inspired me as a musician and artist. I give this album props for trying new angles and re-defining music for it's time. Im not sure why I am re-writing another review on this but for some reason the music is still with me and I still stick this in the car and blast it!!! When my friends who are younger than me get into the car they ask WHO IS THIS!
All I can say is I lost something in my past, and it always comes back to this album for some reason. Anyways if you like King find me you may like what I do! Cheers Thanks MUDI www.soundsbecomeus.com www.muditunes.com |
