Product Description

Steps is more than an ordinary business book. It encompasses the concept of business + dance = brand philosophy. Unless you are willing to work as hard as a dancer learning technique, movement and artistry, you should not even consider building your professional brand. You cannot build a brand unless you are willing to explore excellence.

From Kirkus Reviews:

"From public relations executive Vaccarino (PR For People, 2009) comes a cross between primer and personal memoir on brand-building and business acumen, built on the artistic principles and practice of ballet.

"Self-described as '[m]y not-so-secret life as an adult dancer and how it impacts my life and business,' Vaccarino’s book is a gentle, lyrical pas de deux between author and reader, with specific 'steps' such as 'Positioning,' 'Balance' and 'Fall and Recovery' as chapter headings and core principles. Vaccarino slips between childhood memories of her grandmother’s stairs in Yonkers, N.Y., where she took her first steps and gained a child’s insight into discipline and achievement, and her adult world of ballet and business. Her earliest memories are of a passion for dancing; 'As a toddler, I danced so enthusiastically, my parents did not want to take me out in public,' and later on, 'I danced to the sheer musicality in my own head.' Glimpses of her life’s journey, family secrets and sadness, marriage and motherhood are hung on a trajectory of drawing ever closer to dance and a daily commitment to its pursuit. Throughout the work, tenets of personal ascent ('Our greatest moments of courage are found when we choose to rise higher') are interspersed with tiny jewels of wisdom, but the connections with and transitions to business and branding are few and far between. Vaccarino’s voice is clear and impassioned on the struggles and rewards of ballet’s principles and discipline, but the application to real-world brand and business skill is slightly out-of-step. Filled with juicy quotes from well-known experts ranging from dance mavens to Willa Cather and Peter Drucker, this book is one woman’s discovery of self-empowerment through dance, heavily weighted toward dance rather than business and with a strong undercurrent of spirituality: 'The practice of ballet makes me feel as though I am reaching for an ideal that is close to God.'

"A sweet meal of practical basics in moving toward consistency and accomplishment at the barre of life, though the connection to business could be more fully established."

5.0 out of 5 stars Steps, February 2, 2012

This review is from: Steps (Paperback)
Reading your book "Steps" is a wonderful experience. I attribute this to

your wisdom in business promotions, and also to my knowledge of ballet

vocabulary, thanks to our daughter Livia who earned her

conservatory degree in classical ballet. As a designer, I had an opportunity

to design five stage sets for full length ballet performances, from Giselle,

Nutcracker, to Coppelia and Romeo and Juliet. Reading your book,

I feel like I am back in the environment.

Patricia, your metaphors and parallels are pleasant and inspiring. Your

analogies are accurate and believable. This book will help many business

people to "get it" and adjust the focus of the right targets. The experiance of

reading this book is both emotional and pragmatically enriching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steps make me feel like dancing!, January 7, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Steps (Kindle Edition)
STEPS makes me feel like dancing! Every week, I take two zumba

classes, two spinning classes and I train in weights.

Eight years ago, I met my partner dancing. We danced circles around 20 year olds.

I believe it is important to keep moving. Moving means you are not only helping yourself,

you have the energy to help and take care of other people. And life is all about helping other people.

I feel like I am 40 years old, but my son is 50, and I can?t believe he is that old,

so I guess I should tell you that I?m actually going to turn 70! The key to joy

is to take steps every day and to keep on stepping on.

Patricia Vaccarino's new book STEPS

is a tour de force reminding us how important it is to dance, to live, to

give. To be good at living life, love and business, you just have to keep

moving! --Patricia Hansen

5.0 out of 5 stars Following in the Footsteps of the Imortal Ted Shawn!, January 4, 2012
This review is from: Steps (Kindle Edition)
The 'farther' of modern American dance, Ted Shawn, was quoted as saying, "Dance is any rhythmic motion." The key word here is "rhythmic." In this book, as in her professional life, Patricia has found the perfect rhythm between the creative /expressive form of dance and the strategic pathway of brand building and public relations. Having known the author and shared many conversations about the profession we share, I have always been impressed on her organic thinking and logic and ability to weave a compelling narrative into a strong story. That's what brand building is all about, and in STEPS Patricia continues to broaden her approach, cleaning out the clutter, to offer a fresh and engaging look at the subject at hand.
