They are designed to hold lettersize paper (8.5" x 11") as well as pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, and other smaller items. The front and sides of the drawers are almost completely see-through so you can see the contents in the drawers.
You can also use them as a alternative to stacking letter trays or you can use them for holding your colored lettersize printer paper, greeting cards, and other paper stock. These containers provide almost a limitless number of ways to help you get organized - I love them!
The white plastic provides the sliders for the drawers, and the units are stackable. With a modest amount of weight, they seem to hold up well. But over the course of months, the frame starts to lean, or bow out. In both cases it can no longer support the drawers, and it looks like hell.
The sterilite tubs had a similar problem with the clear tubs with white lids. The white lids seem to work fine at first, but if you stack a bin on top of another, the white lid slowly deform and collapses inside.
So while these are great for organizing small parts or paper, they don't hold up to much load. A ream of paper on top is too much weight to keep the unit from collapsing.
I think this would still be serviceable for infrequent use, such as underneath a bathroom sink - as other reviewers have mentioned.
