Book Description

10 and up5 and upSterling Biographies
The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. That was Thomas Edison’s philosophy, and it led him to create the incandescent light bulb and illuminate the world with electricity. But that was just one of the many groundbreaking inventions Edison devised, many of which changed the shape of entertainment, industry, and everyday life. Meet the Wizard of Menlo Park, and see how he grew from a lonely, inquisitive boy who carried out experiments in his basement to the smart, enterprising, and imaginative inventor who gave us the stock market ticker, helped develop the phonograph and cinema, and even came up with the first storage battery and electric car.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prolific inventor, July 23, 2011

This review is from: Sterling Biographies: Thomas Edison: The Man Who Lit Up the World (Paperback)
Edison has over 1000 patents to his name, which earns him the place of one of the most prolific inventors. Nicknamed "The Wizard of Menlo Park" his inventions span from his early work on an improved stock ticker, to the phonograph and the motion picture camera, and of course, the light bulb - an invention he is undoubtedly associated with first and foremost. However, the brilliance and perseverance required to achieve all of these discoveries also has led him astray on at least a few occasions: DC vs AC current, his iron ore extraction project, and motion camera go to market strategy.

Martin Woodside did a great job of balancing the personal, the business, and the scientist in his coverage of Edison - no small feat in such a few pages. Unlike many other inventors, Edison knew how to balance science, invention, and the practical aspects of business and marketing, and this book offers a great view into his life and methodology. Great introduction to Edison, his inventions, and their impact on our everyday life.
