More About the Author

I served as a physician in the British Army during the Boer War. Wait. Sorry. That was Arthur Conan Doyle. I was raised in Spokane, and went to school in Pullman and Chicago. My wife Patti, our two daughters, and I live in Seattle. I'm trying to learn to play the tenor saxophone, but Coleman Hawkins needn't be looking over his shoulder. I teach novel writing at the University of Washington extension school, and maintain a blog about fiction writing (www.novelpro.net), where I discuss writing techniques each day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best spy thriller I've read in a long time!, February 22, 2007

This review is from: The Stettin Secret (Paperback)
Wow! What a great book, I can't believe it's not credited as being James Stewart Thayer's masterpiece. Is right up there with The Eagle Has Landed and Eye of the Needle - one of the best spy thrillers I've ever read!

An American spy is sent to Poland, 1947 with a mission - sink the first and only Nazi aircraft carrier, the Graf Zeppelin, before the Soviets can refurbish it for their own navy. He's pursued by communists, enlists the help of a beautiful partisan woman and a former Gestapo officer, and is basically written off by the OSS in Washington before he even begins. Very well written, fascinating characters and it's clear Thayer does his research. The ending feels a little rushed, but overall a great read. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great thriller from James Thayer, December 17, 2010

This review is from: The Stettin Secret (Paperback)
This is a spy thriller set in Poland in the early Cold War, with OSS operative Andrew Jay assigned to sink the Nazi aircraft carrier, the Graf Zeppelin, before the Russians can take it back to Russia.

Nobody and nothing is what they seem to be in this story. There is plenty of suspense here and the climax is thrilling.

I think this is better than The Hess Cross. I'll be looking for other books by this author.

Highly recommended.
