Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Steve Earle takes an intensive album-by-album look at this influential artist, offering critical appraisal of each recording and a portrait of each album’s studio process through interviews with the artist and the producers, engineers, arrangers, and musicians involved. An introductory essay tells the story of Earle’s life from his childhood in southwest Texas up to his first studio session. Additional biographical information—including archival and exclusive first-time interviews—reveals the circumstances in Earle’s often-tumultuous life at the time of each recording. The book also contains complete session information—dates, producers, engineers, mastering engineers, recording studios, songs and songwriters, and musicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Overview of Earle's career in music, and the context in which it was spawned, December 2, 2005
By Harris J. Schneider (Skokie, IL USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
David McGee is a gifted writer who takes the approach of focusing on the music of the great singer/songwriter Steve Earle, rather than making this a soap opera, which much of his personal life has been. I read the previous biography by Lauren St. John and came away pretty confused. McGee does a much better job of clearly describing what's going on in Steve's life, but focusing on the musical side of things. Earle's genius is obvious in these pages, but McGee is perfectly willing to reveal the flawed genius Earle is in his writing.

The book is an easy read, but also a rewarding read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another Semi-un/authorized Steve Biography, February 16, 2006
This is an odd one. While valuable, this book exists in the shadow of "Hardcore Troubadour." Specifically, while taking pot shots at the accuracy of the above-noted book, it also quotes extensively from the above-noted book in the absence of independent research. "Fearless Heart" does contain some great insight from Stacey Earle, Mark Stuart, and Steve's dad.
