5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites September 7, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Steve Gillette was active in Los Angeles in the mid-1960s and I had the great pleasure of seeing him perform live. A talented guitarist with a mellow, captivating voice, he also wrote most of his own, compelling material. One of the many superb pieces, Darcy Farrow, as later recorded by Ian and Sylvia. I have owned the album for over a quarter century and it is still one of my favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars A legend's work restored April 24, 2000
Format:Audio CD
This album is a classic, not to be missed. There's not a bad cut on it and particularly outstanding are the Erlking, Back on the Street Again, and Molly and Tenbrooks. As a writer, Gillett's in the premier class. As a singer of mostly his own songs, he's in the same class.

I was very lucky to be raised in OC Calif, where Steve was a local favorit, From the Golden Bear, To the Mecca, he graced us with him mellow voice and EXCELLENT Guitar work for many many years. After the Folk clubs died down a bit you could find him on Friday and Sat night at the Cast and Cleaver on Tustin Avenue in the City of Orange where you could get an up front seat and really truly enjoy his workmanship. Those were the days He was one of the best, just wish he had not fallen in love and moved out of the state of California :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Craftsmanship February 26, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Steve Gillette should be rated among the top 5 male folk composer/singers of his generation. His clear baritone voice, honesty, and writing warrant the stature over many others.
Even though this album is his first, the musicianship and song writing craftsmanship still stand up today. We all know that his songs have appeared on several other albums by other singers and that he is appreciated in the business. That not withstanding, Steve Gillette's delivery do his own tunes better justice.
The album is solid from start to finish, but of specific note is his rendition of the Goethe poem "Erlkonig". Schubert's version is a monument to his time and Steve Gillette's version is a monument for ours.
This is a must album for any serious collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars As I remember it July 7, 2013

Purchased the original LP when it was issued. The CD did not disappoint. The songs are still timely and the guitar work is still excellent.
