Backstabbing, Credit-grabbing good times!, February 12, 2004
This review is from: Star Munchkin (Kitchen)
Star Munchkin is a fun card game that manages to pit players against each other or force them to help one another depending on who's the perceived frontrunner. You will like this game if you are a fan of the TV show Survivor. If you are a fan of both Survivor and the Sci-fi channel you will love this game. If you are both of the above and you also consider yourself a somewhat perverse person who enjoys being backstabbed just as much as he enjoys backstabbing...you should see a psychiatrist. Seriously. This game differs from the original Munchkin in two important ways. One positive, one negative. Positively, you can acquire henchmen in this game. the ubiquitous "red shirts" from Star Trek are here to be disposed of as your fortunes (or whim!) dictates. The down side is that there are no expansion sets for this game yet. Since you can play the original Munchkin with up to three available expansions it is a more interesting and less likely to be repetitive game. I would advise you to buy the original Munchkin if you are only buying one. If you already have the original Munchkin plus expansions, or Sci-Fi is more your preference over a fantasy setting, then I would reccomend Star Munchkin. Either way it will be the most fun you have had playing cards in a while.

Possibly the best of the series..., May 21, 2007
This review is from: Star Munchkin (Kitchen)
Like the others of the Munchkin Series, Star Munchkin features wacky and lovable art while lampooning roleplaying games and gamers. Obviously the most distinctive feature of the game is its science fiction-oriented comedy. The art and flavor text of the cards take jabs not only at Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Gallactica, Red Dwarf and others, but also at general science fiction themes.
Game play is slightly friendlier than the original Munchkin. The traps and class abilities of the original allow for much more fierce competition, a dynamic that is somewhat muted in Star Munchkin. Despite my love of sci-fi, the mechanic of the game that has made this my favorite is the "-aser weapons." We're familiar with lasers, and phasers, but Star Munchkin has allowed us guns that are razors, spraysers, masers, dasers, and so on. Any weapon ending in "-aser" can be combined with any other weapon ending in "-aser" allowing the bonuses to stack. This is worth several laughs around the table when you are wielding a "maser-daser-shmaser-bobaser-banannafanafofaser-laser."
Star Munchkin is great game play for anyone who enjoys either science fiction or roleplaying. Everyone else may enjoy the fun of the game, but will likely miss the genre specific jokes.

Star Munchkin, it's good!!, September 22, 2005
This review is from: Star Munchkin (Kitchen)
Star Munchkin is the outer space version of Steve Jackson Games' successful Munchkin cardgame. We played this one with a friend of mine, and my 12 year old son thought it was the coolest game ever, so I bought him his own copy for his birthday. We've had loads of fun playing it for the past couple of months, and we've really gotten into it. (My son particularly likes being a feline bounty hunter with a "Bananafanafofaser.") Gameplay is pretty simple; a game session can last from a few minutes to almost an hour, depending on how much you want to "stab your buddy." The only downside is that with only one set, it can become repetitive. But we're only playing it with 2 players (the box recommneds 3), so that may be part of it. I'm guessing that the more card sets you add, the less repetative (and more chaotic) it will be. We're already talking about the other sets we want to add. All in all, Star Munchkin is a good, fast game for anyone about 10 or older.
