Editorial Reviews

Review

"The darling of mens lifestyle bloggers everywhere, Steve McQueen has long epitomized rugged cool. This book is a paean to the legend. It offers iconic photographs of McQueen with his cars and motorcycles but also rare shots of him riding horses, working out and relaxing with his wife. Worth buying for the photos alone." - Forbes.com

"There are books about famous movie stars and books about famous auto racers, but rarely do the two disciplines converge. Paul Newman is one example while Hollywood legend Steve McQueen is another. Some of McQueen's better-known roles included the Mustang-driving detective in "Bullitt" and the motorcycle-jumping POW in "The Great Escape". But it was his 1971 portrayal as Porsche-pilot Michael Delaney in Le Mans where McQueen displayed his fanaticism for auto racing. Frederic Brun's book Steve McQueen: A Passion for Speed is full of behind the scenes photos of the actor / racer's obsession in front of the camera as well as participating in various racing events. www.motorbooks.com" - Newsday

From the Inside Flap

Even 30 years after his death, Steve McQueen remains an icon of cool. His image continues to appear in advertising and pop culture, and he has a particularly ardent following among car, motorcycle, and racing enthusiasts. Steve McQueen: A Passion for Speed chronicles the actor/racer’s fascination with and love for all things internal combustion-powered.

In his movies, McQueen’s character always had a great motorcycle or car -- from the "BMW" motorcycle (actually a made-over Triumph) he piloted in The Great Escape (1963); to the 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback he drove in the fantastic chase in Bullitt (1968); to the Ferrari 275 GTS/4 NART Spyder roadster in the provocative The Thomas Crown Affair (1968); and the Gulf-liveried Porsche 917 race car he maneuvered on the track in Le Mans (1971).

But McQueen’s need for speed didn’t stop with the silver screen. He was an avid and skilled amateur off-road racer who competed in top events including the Baja 1000, Mint 400 and Elsinore Grand Prix. He was fast on a road course as well, teaming with Peter Revson to finish second in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1970.

Determined to be ahead of the pack, McQueen maintained his body like a machine as well. He trained vigorously, weight lifting, running and studying martial arts.

McQueen: A Passion for Speed offers a fresh, handsomely illustrated look into the star's various gearhead pursuits, from desert racing to Le Mans, sports cars to antique motorcycles. It’s a fitting tribute to a life lived in the moment and with pedal to the metal.

Especially interesting because book is written from a foreigner's perspective (French) of a quintessential American icon. Explores McQueen's personality, i.e. its weaknesses, as the impetus for his need to "prove something." Describes his private interests in racing, car/motorcycle collection, and on-screen use of vehicles. Strength of book lies in the candid personal photos, quite a few of which not previously seen.

I am a big Steve McQueen and buy every book released on him. I got this for Christmas but this book was disappointing though. Just another collection of images. I had seen them all before.

There were too many classic, but too familiar, photos by famous photographers repeated in other books. If you want proof have a look at the photo credits, all photos are licensed from the usual and same old sources e.g. Getty images, Library of Congress, MPTV... basically all the usual sources where these images are all available, have been used many times already and not "unseen" or new.

Also the book was advertised about his racing and passion for speed. But there was a whole section of just stills of McQueen posing with nothing to do with racing at all. Such as publicity shots for Thomas Crown Affair of him in a formal suit. It made no sense to include these.

The text was very brief, just a few pages for each of the 5 chapters and nothing new. So it's just really a collection of images. So many books appear on the market for Steve McQueen where all the author has done is repeat photos already seen. The same is true here unfortunately. There is no skill in doing this, its lazy workmanship to just repeat already well-known images. People deserve something original.

2 stars because if you know little about McQueen then its fine, but for a fan of McQueen it is nothing new. Not a terrible book in some ways, just nothing new or interesting. As a fan it would be good to see some fresh images and some fresh insights.

Not being the world's ultimate Steve McQueen fan I did not purchase this book. I got my copy at the library. A good way to spend two hours on a Sunday night. The text is good. Not too much and not overwhelming. The photos are quite good. Especially for those who are big fans of the man as a racer or motorcycle rider. A lot of very candid photos that stars today would probably not allow to be shot. Life was so much more simple then. Fun shots of McQueen and first wife, Neile. I had forgotten about her. Great shots of his great cars and fantastic bikes. I did find myself salivating and coveting somewhat. McQueen was a man's man in a time when this was expected. He played the part well, as demonstrated by this book. On the screen and off. Worth your time if you are a real McQueen fan. Book is well put together and photos are very good.
