By the time Sheryl Crow released her fourth studio album in early 2002, she had already established herself as one of the leading women in rock music. Since her vivid and colourful debut album "Tuesday Night Music Club" from 1993, she had hit single after hit single all through the Nineties with songs such as "All I Wanna Do," "Leaving Las Vegas," "Strong Enough" and "Can't Cry Anymore." Her self-titled second album and its follow-up, "The Globe Sessions," spawned hits such as "If It Makes You Happy," "A Change Would Do You Good," "Home," and "My Favorite Mistake."

Fans heard nothing of Sheryl through most of 1999, 2000 and 2001. She was busy working on her new album. It was called "C'mon C'mon" and left the fans a little disappointed upon its release. Of all Sheryl's albums, I regard this to be the worst, yet it does have some amazing songs on it. The album itself has summer as its central theme - these are songs you can listen to on the beach as you relax by the waves. The album's first single was "Soak Up The Sun," followed by "Steven McQueen." This second single isn't as good as the first in my opinion, but it still has qualities which make it shine.

The song opens with a funky guitar which strums loudly before Sheryl starts singing the first verse, "Well I went to bed in Memphis and I woke up in Hollywood. I got a quarter in my pocket and I'd call you if I could. But I don't know why. I gotta fly. I wanna rock and roll this party. I still wanna have some fun. I wanna leave you feeling breathless, show you how the West was won. But I gotta fly. I gotta fly! Sheryl then sings the first chorus with powerful vocals, "Like Steve McQueen! All I need's a fast machine and I'm gonna make it all right. (Woo woo!) Like Steve McQueen! Underneath your radar screen. You'll never catch me tonight." Sheryl then sings the second verse, "I ain't taking s**t off no one baby that was yesterday. I'm an all-American rebel making my big getaway. Yeah you know it's time. I gotta fly!" Sheryl then sings the second chorus before an instrumental section breaks out. "Like Steve McQueen!" echoes in the background.

Sheryl then sings, "We got rockstars in the Whitehouse and all our popstars look like porn. All my heroes hit the highway. They don't hang out here no more. You can call me anytime. You can page me all night long but you won't catch this freebird. I'll already be gone." Sheryl then sings the chorus again over and over until the song finishes.

Overall this is a song which took a while to grow on me, but now that it has, I really like it. The chorus is catchy, the vocals are fresh, the lyrics are sassy and the arrangement is very strong. The video to this song was very sexy and Sheryl really knows how to shake it! Overall a strong song to add to the Crow musicology!
