Great but could have been better,

This review is from: Steve Miller Band - Live From Chicago (DVD)
I was very excited to hear that this was coming out as I have seen Steve Miller in concert and it was great. This DVD is well done with good sound. As others have stated, the band is in good form. I do have a few problems with it though.
1) The documentary is interesting and it was nice to hear Steve talk about his past in Chicago but I felt the person conducting the interview was a complete waste. It was nice to let Steve do most of the talking but on the other hand, the lack of actual questioning almost made him seem uncomfortable. The shots of the interviewer just nodding his head were also not needed. 2) Song selection. While I can appreciate the need for Steve to pay tribute to his blues roots with the 3 covers, I felt short-changed by the lack of material from some of his albums. Nothing from Italian X-rays, Born 2 B Blue, Livin' in the 20th Century and Wide River and even the widely regarded mis-fire Circle of Fire. Not only are there hit songs on most of these albums, but there are good blues tracks. 3) The rap section during Fly Like An Eagle is oddly out of place. I still give this package a high rating because of the value for the $ and even with the above albums not represented, you still can't go wrong. At least the cover songs were well performed.

Now Steve Miller fans can experience him live without hopping on a big old "Jet Airliner" to Chicago to do it. Filmed before an enthusiastic crowd at the Ravinia Amphitheater in Chicago the Steve Miller "Live from Chicago" concert DVD is guaranteed to please fans of all ages. It's a magical night in Chicago and the band is in fine form as they "Fly like an Eagle" through twenty of their greatest hits. From the moment the concert starts until the last song is played fans realize they're in for a magical night they won't soon forget.
Filmed live in the summer of 2007 this concert DVD showcases the band like nothing I've ever seen or heard before. Its all hear in one fantastic show filmed with multiple cameras in high definition and the picture and sound definitely doesn't disappoint. The crisp playing by the entire band and great vocals from Steve Miller is proof of why fans still come to see him perform. He is such a class act that he even pauses to sign autographs for a couple fans before the last song is played. Hearing the band play Fly like an Eagle, Jungle Love and Jet Airliner was worth the price of this DVD set. Koch Entertainment has to be commended for their efforts in bringing Steve Miller fans this live concert performance. The video and audio transfers of this concert are truly spectacular. The picture filmed in HD is crisp and clear and the colors are sharp and vibrant to say the least. The sound is crisp and clean and the 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS sound absolutely rock! This incredible 3 disc set containing the concert DVD, bonus features DVD and audio CD is a definite must have for any Steve Miller Fan. My only complaint is with the disc packaging, the concert and bonus discs sit on top of one another making it tricky to take them out. If you're careful it shouldn't be a problem. I hope this information was helpful. THE STEVE MILLER BAND HAS ALWAYS BEEN A GREAT CONCERT SHOW.I'VE SEEN THE BAND 10 TIMES AND NEVER BEEN DISSAPOINTED. THIS CONCERT IS BY FAR THE BEST SHOW I'VE SEEN.THE CONCERT IS FILMED BETTER THAN ANY SHOW I OWN.THE BAND WAS SO TIGHT THAT THE CONCERT WAS OVER BEFORE I KNEW IT.THE MUSIC STANDS ALONE BUT THE EFFORT THAT WENT INTO THE PLAYING AND FILMING REALLY COMES THRU. AFTER SEEING THIS DVD WE BOUGHT TICKETS TO SEE THE SHOW IN AUGUST. THE SHOW WE ARE GONNA SEE HAS JOE COCKER OPENING FOR THEM. WHAT A COMBO...SWINGTOWN, HERE WE COME......

Growing up in the 70's The Steve Miller band was certainly on the list. But as we all know time takes it's toll. I have Eagles, Styx, R.E.O and others. You can tell Steve s a little over the hill voice wise , but he can sure still play. I bought this DVD. And I'm not sorry about it , but don't expect the same sining voice you have on your old LP's or tapes.
Video is top notch, but time takes it's toll.

Thanks Steve and the Fellas,
This review is from: Steve Miller Band - Live From Chicago (DVD)
I just want to say thanks to Steve and all the guys in his awesome band for this dvd which is fantastic from top to bottom. All the tunes you want are here and almost always exceed the originals. There is some great jamming going on here as all the players are great soloists and Steve is the generous boss who lets the fellas show off their chops. And the 'blues' segment in the middle is wonderful. The Jimmie Vaughan tune is a gem. A must own for sure. This is a no brainer. Buy it.

I recently saw Steve Miller Band perform live in concert in San Francisco, so when I heard they were releasing a new cd/dvd, I just had to get it. I'm so glad I did! Excellant CD! It has most of his greatest hits. The DVD is great to watch. Its about 90 minutes long and it pretty much is identical to the concert that I saw him perform in March 08. I highly recommend this collection, you wont be disappointed!!
The only part of the entire CD I didnt care much for was the version of "Fly like an Eagle" which incorporated some rap lyrics from their keyboardist. The rap music was done tastefully, but personnally I dont care for rap and think SM should have left it out. Other than that, EXCELLANT gift set!!!!!!

Wow! I saw Steve Miller a few times back in the day, and I remember how the energy of his shows stood out among the giant artists of the seventies. I see he hasn't lost his touch in the past 30 years. His set list and surrounding musicians are top-notch. This DVD had me on my feet, boogying and just having a foot-stomping good time. Buy this DVD...it will not disappoint.

The Steve Miller Band DVD is a great well worth the money. I'll admit at first to thinking a bit about the price but, hay tickets to see them live cost more. I was blown away at how great Steve and his band are live. Now I hope to catch the show next time the band comes to town. In the mean time if your a Steve Miller fan my advice is buy the DVD you will be glad you did. One quick side note for guitar players is they too will enjoy this DVD a lot.

I've been a fan for years and over time I've seen most major acts over the years, but unfortunately I've never had the pleasure of seeing Steve Miller
live. This dvd is well worth the price of admission. The show starts off a little slow, but, after the first half of the first song, the band hits full stride and It becomes a true fans show. the vocals are crisp and the guitar riffs and burning lead solos that are crisp and clean. overall, the production and sound is impecable and the musicianship is is second to none. If you're a long time fan, you'll be very very pleased and if you're a casual fan, I can assure you, you'll be a convert by the end of the show.

It never fails that every time I play the compendium audio CD in my car, people start to hum along and always are like, "Steve Miller?" Firstly, I agree with the other reviewers that this band sounds great. Steve sounds awesome and the backing band are really tight. The crowd is loving it albeit waiting for Steve to play the classics. When he does everyone is dancing.
I love the Steve Miller Band classics and he plays all of them here. The stage setup is uncluttered and neat. The lighting won't give you a headache and the audio on the DVD is really good. I just have a stereo system and have no problems with the two speakers. It is a little pricey, but it is a high quality a/v recording. |
