5.0 out of 5 stars Another Stellar Performance
Once again Steve Turre has shown his style and ability by making an album that is entertaining to all. Turre not only shows his technical ability, but he shows his usual graceful and easing style. He also has great guest performances. The list includes Randy Brecker, J. J. Johnson, John Faddis, and many others. While Turre's seeming obsession with the conchshell...

3.0 out of 5 stars Technically superior, but not melodic
Yes, Steve Turre is a technical wizard on the trombone. I play trombone, and I am amazed at the sounds he can get out of that tapered tube. I bought this CD just on Jamey Aebersold's recommendation, but I must admit I was somewhat disappointed at the CD contents. I guess it would be nice background music at a party, but I really don't listen to it very often at all. I...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Stellar Performance, November 21, 2000
This review is from: Steve Turre (Audio CD)
Once again Steve Turre has shown his style and ability by making an album that is entertaining to all. Turre not only shows his technical ability, but he shows his usual graceful and easing style. He also has great guest performances. The list includes Randy Brecker, J. J. Johnson, John Faddis, and many others. While Turre's seeming obsession with the conchshell provides the listener with a very soothing and natural sound at times, occasionally he can leave the listener wishing he would pick up his trombone. I guess at his level of ability you are constantly looking for new ways to musically express (and entertain) yourself. Nevertheless this album is a must have for anyone who values the beauty of the trombone, or the intricacies of good jazz.

5.0 out of 5 stars At His Best, July 9, 2007

I think this album is certainly anything BUT "technical gymnastics", as another reviewer has described it. Turre's compositions/arrangements are beautiful and sophisticated. It is hardly a simple "trombone" solo album, which may mislead some. The presence of the master (J.J. himself)on the album should speak volumes. His soloing over the group's amazing ethnic afro-cuban/oriental texture is sublime and powerful at the same time.

This is my all time favorite album of Turre's and is a microcosm of his best tendecies. It is hard to imagine a jazz oriented composition being more colorful and enjoyable than Steve's tone poem "The Emperor" or the ecclectic and very entransing "Coastin' with Bobby".

Mr. Turre's shells are also a refreshing bit of cultural tastiness which are in no way intrusive, but rather a means of fleshing out the album's ethnic beauty.

I bought this CD just on Jamey Aebersold's recommendation, but I must admit I was somewhat disappointed at the CD contents. I guess it would be nice background music at a party, but I really don't listen to it very often at all. I like melodic music - music you sing to yourself, something you can follow and perhaps imitate. But most of the songs on this CD are ad lib solos and technical gymnastics, most with a latin feel. It was just not what I was looking for in trombone music. If you like the same type of music that I do, try J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding or Wycliffe Gordon first.
