5.0 out of 5 stars great smoke
These wood blends are excellent. I use them on my gas grill religiously...and I grill almost daily.

3.0 out of 5 stars Flavor is good, but chips too small
I got these chips to use with a side firebox style smoker. The box lasted for an 8-hour smoke which was good. However, the chips are very hard to use as they are very small, and sometimes only slightly bigger than a toothpick. When you soak them, they last a little longer, of course, but even then, when you throw them on hot coals, they burn up pretty quickly, and the...

These chips have worked very well in my smoker over the past year. I have used them mainly when smoking brisket - and have loved the smoke flavor. The benefit to using smaller chips is that they only need to soak for a short period of time before using. One the other hand, the negative of the small chips is that they burn off quickly. I usually use these in combination with larger wood chunks of either hickory or mesquite. This gives me the combination of great smoke flavor over a longer period of time. I have also added a second batch of chips later in my smoking to add more flavor. Of course, this all up to personal preference - I happen to enjoy a strong smoke flavor in most of my meats. I will definitely be ordering these (and the other varieties) again.

These chips impart amazing flavor, either soaked in water, whiskey or both. You can also do like I do and just throw them on the bottom of my gas grill to smoke the meat. It is recommended to soak these and place in a smoking tin which works great too but in a pinch or if time is limited you can just do like I said above and throw it in the grill.

3.0 out of 5 stars Flavor is good, but chips too small, January 27, 2012

I got these chips to use with a side firebox style smoker. The box lasted for an 8-hour smoke which was good. However, the chips are very hard to use as they are very small, and sometimes only slightly bigger than a toothpick. When you soak them, they last a little longer, of course, but even then, when you throw them on hot coals, they burn up pretty quickly, and the smoke for flavoring on each handful doesn't last long. Which, if you don't want to risk over-smoking you meat, may be a good thing, but if you don't want to be constantly adding chips every hour to your firebox either, than this is a bad thing.

I would not purchase these again. I would prefer bigger chunks which would last longer and smoke longer at a time. If you want some quick smoke flavor to a traditional grilling of 20-30 minutes, then this might be good to impart some good flavor. Just not for a smoker where you are smoking for 6+ hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best wood chips for beef hands down, July 12, 2011

This is a must have if you own a grill that supports wood chips. We were charcoal only grillers for 15+ years, but recently bought a char broil infrared gas grill that has the trays for wood chips - the flavor of the food with the right chips far exceeds charcoal! I would never have believed how good grilled foods can taste on a gas grill...

I've tried his chicken and seafood - they are good, but this one is the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent on beef, June 1, 2011
This review is from: Steven Raichlen Best of Barbecue Smoking Wood Chips for Beef (Lawn & Patio)
I tried this out for the 1st time and it'll vary depending on your smoker. But I tested it on an smoker box and placed it on my grill. it worked and made the flavors and smell of the meats i was cooking excellent. Highly recommended to others. Just make sure you read on how to properly set it up or you'll burn all your chips.

These are excellent for beef; far better than hickory, alder, mesquite, apple, or oak all by itself. Using these chips, I have had vegetarians ask for seconds.

These wood chips are great. Impressed friends, grandparents, etc. My mom found the flavor more subtle than other wood chips, which she finds overpowering.
