Editorial Reviews

Review

“These miniature guides are packed to the margins with important facts and enlightening commentary.” -- PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

Product Description

Pocket Essentials is a dynamic series of books that are concise, lively, and easy to read. Packed with facts as well as expert opinions, each book has all the key information you need to know about such popular topics as film, television, cult fiction, history, and more. Steven Soderbergh burst onto the independent scene with his provocative, multi-award winning feature debut Sex, Lies and Videotape in 1989. Soderbergh continued to plough his own furrow, producing numerous successful films along the way, such as Out of Sight, Erin Brokovich, and Ocean's Eleven. As well as having an introductory essay, in this book each of Soderbergh's films is reviewed and analyzed. There's a handy reference section listing all the Soderbergh related publications, and a full filmography, including Soderbergh's tireless work as a producer and cameraman.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother, July 17, 2003
By Donald Beale (Baton Rouge, LA United States) - See all my reviews
This slim guidebook isn't worth even its meager cover price. The author covers Soderbergh's directorial efforts up through "Ocean's Eleven" (2001) using a series of subheadings such as Cast, Crew, Story, Subtext, and Verdict for each film. The book also includes a section on unrealized projects as well and an introduction and epilogue. Much of the information is available elsewhere, and the author's original comments show no special insight. Most disturbing, in synopsizing each film, the author gets the facts of the plot wrong on a couple of occasions. Soderbergh's work deserves better.
