A few problems ... but you can't deny Stevie ...,
By
This review is from: LIVE AT RED ROCKS (DVD)
I first got into Fleetwood Mac back in 1997 when they were on the Dance Tour. My mother was totally excited because they would be performing at the Pepsi Arena, here in Albany, NY, on Thanksgiving Eve ... so of course we went. I was HOOKED from that day forward. For Christmas that year my mother got me Stevie's greatest hits album, Timespace, and then I went from being hooked to being OBSSESSED!
In 1999 I got the Red Rocks concert and I loved it. Actually, at this point in my life, I was in the middle of losing 60 pounds, so every night for months on the stationary bike I would watch the show. Perhaps the only problem I might have NOW with the show is that not EVERY song performed that night in 1986 are included on the disc, like "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," "Sara," and "I Can't Wait." These probably weren't included for obvious Stevie reasons, being, for one, that "Sara" is a very personal song to her and she's always reluctant to perform it in front of people, not to mention that it, like "I Can't Wait," turned out MUCH better on recording and didn't transfer to stage all that well. But seeing that this Rock a Little Tour was the only in which she performed "I Can't Wait," it would have made the disc more of a collector's item ... and thus a better concert.

A difficult time in her life......,

I am a tried and true fan of Stevie Nicks. But, I must be honest, I was embarassed for her when I watched this concert video. She was nearing the end of a very dangerous drug and alcohol addiction. In fact, I have read that after this concert, she checked herself into a rehab. The setting was absolutely magical. The dove landing on her hand and not wanting to leave was symbolic and beautiful. As far as her performance, her voice never fails her, but she was screaming and sometimes singing in gibberish. I must say her first taped concert during the Bella Donna tour was superb in comparison! Apologies to other true fans like me, but I cannot lie about my opinion even though I love Stevie Nicks.

Not the best Stevie Nicks Video I have ever seen, but far from the worst. Stevie's etherial beauty and rich vocals come out wonderfully. In my opinion, there is too much pan and scan of things I'm not interested in, ie: anything but Stevie and the Band. Waddy on guitar, and Lori, Sharon, and Elisecia on backup vocals were marvelous. I'm sure you will hear some people whine about "she doesn't follow the lyrics from the album" DUH! this IS live music, and besides, these are HER songs, so she can change the words to suit her. Anyway, she could sing random words from the dictionary, and I would probably enjoy hearing it.

I remember seeing a special on 20/20 a few years back. "The highs"... flash to Rumours-era Stevie. "The lows"... flash to Red Rocks Stevie performing an exorcism on herself in "Edge of 17". This video captures all of Stevie's 80s excesses and was in fact one of the last times we would see her before she entered into Betty Ford. The editting is also timeless. Here we have full body Stevie shots from the actual concert but we also have close-ups shot in a studio. Interesting that nobody decided to keep the hairstyle consistent. Although the set list and lyrics to these songs are always impressive, the performance seems a little embarrassing (in a funny way of course). The ad-libbing near the end "Beauty and the Beast" is priceless. Stevie's consistent shrieks and howls throughout the concert will leave you wanting more. Another highlight is when Stevie starts talking to a dove in her palm after "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?" I am a die-hard Stevie fan and I know other fans will hate me for this so I apologize. But only buy this if you want to see a laughable side of Stevie. She is better represented in Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance" or "Live in Boston" or even her own solo "HBO Live In Concert", the last of which is only available on VHS.

i bought this when first issued on vhs in 87. loved it. as i will always love my stevie. sure it was the 80s big "you give love a bad name" hair, big production and yes stevie decided on close-ups being shot after the concert when she felt and looked better. it all doesnt matter to me. the drama and the magic is all there. great venue, great songs. HAS ANYONE EVER WRITTEN ANYTHING FOR YOU still floors me...when shes asked about the men in her life...i know what shes talking about...connections. dreams lost and found, they are in stevie's songs and they transcend time and fashions. i had U2 live at red rocks too but never played it as much as stevie. it still gives me a thrill. when dvd's started coming out this was the first and only one i bought before ever getting a player. i knew i had to have it...and when i'm asked about my obsession with miss stevie nicks i just say she's a poet, a legend, and everything to me.

The Nightbird Rocks Again!,
This review is from: LIVE AT RED ROCKS (DVD)
I got this DVD as a birthday present and I have to say it's my favorite thing I got! It is a better than great show from beginning to end with the opening of the masses of fans going in to the finish of her dancing to "The Edge of Seventeen." She really blasts out parts of "Outside the Rain" and "The Edge of Seventeen" I love it! There's such raw emotion and feeling it really pulls you in! The tenderness of "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You" is only made better by her reaction to the white winged doves that are released in the end. "I Need to Know" is a great fast-paced song that you will sing for days after word! I don't see why people complain about the sound or picture quality, I think the entire production is stunning and great quality. The close ups are great, not just of Stevie but all the singers and band members too. I would give this 10 stars if I could, it's just that good!
P.S. There are two audio options, pick 'english 2' and it really seems to bring her voice to the forefront. That might help some people.

Welcome to Stevie's life! This has got to be Stevie in her most despairing period. Obviously, she is coked out of her tree, but that doesn't stop 'the gypsy' from ringing out one of her best performances, I think; ever! It is a rare and true gift of the artist to pull you in, emotionally and sometimes physically; into her world! I got goosebumps on several different occasions, and can't count the number of times I have watched this video(or just put it on to listen to). I happened to like the way she did 'Talk to Me' here and prefer the live, experimental way she plays with it. Has anyone ever written anything or sung something for you that made the hair stand up on the back of your neck? Altogether, she is giving this one her all, and more! Mentions of 'not enough Mick Fleetwood' are just whiny; THIS IS STEVIE NICKS! Piece at the end of the show with dove is priceless, and you find yourself chortling along with her, still enjoined in the whole totally fabulous experience. One to buy, forever to listen too......

Stevie at her absolute best!!,
This review is from: Stevie Nicks: Live at Red Rocks (DVD)
Stevie may be drugged up in this performance but she is great!!!. The songs are all planned great as well. The long introduction to "Stand Back" is great, the "Outside Rain/Dreams" transition is excellent, and the extended "Edge of Seventeen" finishes this concert unforgettably. Even though Stevie gets a litte rough on the "screaming" in "Edge Of Seventeen", it's still a very powerful performance! Other songs that do really well are "Beauty and the Beast", "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You". The rest of the songs are just as great as well. Then there's the scene with the doves and the dove that does not leave Stevie's hand. The fact that she keeps it as a pet shows her big heart as her big heart is also shown when she greets her fans for a long time at the end. There is also another bit of history that goes with this concert and that is when the concert was over, Stevie left and drove right to the Betty Ford Center for cocaine rehab. Knowing that she was planning to do this, the emotions she may have been feeling about it may have come out in her performance because she really has ENERGY at the end. Overall, this is one of those concerts that you say "Wow, I wish I would been there". So get the video, Stevie-lover or not, you're gonna love it!

one of the few Stevie Nicks dvd's,

This review is from: LIVE AT RED ROCKS (DVD)
I've owned this dvd for years and watched it recently for the first time in a long time. I was inspired to revisit this concert after hearing the uncut bootleg of Red Rocks. Man, did they clean up the vocals for this dvd! Her voice was shot to the point that she talked quite a few of her lyrics or just let the girls sing them for her at times. I've heard that the guy that edited the dvd said they couldn't show closeups of her because "she looked bad". Next time you watch Stand Back, pause it where they show her briefly to the right of Frampton. She looks so wasted I can't help wonder if she even remembers anything about that concert. Also during that song, check out the way her backup singers are looking at her when she sings "it's not all right" rather than the actual lyrics "it's all right". She was correct, it wasn't all right and I'm glad she quit the hard partying in the nick of time. 5 stars since I love Stevie Nicks and live footage of her during the 70s and 80s is scarce and I'll watch anything I can get my hands on from that period. Besides, I didn't dislike it and find it to be an interesting show even if we didn't get to see and hear the whole thing on dvd.

Queen of Rock,
This review is from: LIVE AT RED ROCKS (DVD)
Few people know that the vocals on this were redubbed and the entire show was highly edited-as were many of the Mac/Nicks videos of that time. One clue is the close ups of her face which show a completely different hair style. However-this still remains one of the best live concerts out there. It totally captures the essence of Stevie when she was in her most infamous "Rock a Little" period. It's worth trying to track down the original unedited bootleg if you can-I've been trying for some time. Definitely buy this and enjoy the woman most consider to be the queen of rock at one of the most interesting times in her life. Be aware this concert does not have many of her trademark songs. I prefer this concert over the earlier In Concert video from the Bella Donna tour-although you should really have both. Rock on Rhiannon!
