Craig Hopkins' latest book on Stevie Ray Vaughan is an authoritative and detailed account of the life and music of Stevie through 1982 or the pre-commercial years. This is the fourth book that Mr. Hopkins has written on Stevie Ray Vaughan. The current book is actually a more specific account of Hopkins' 2008 release 'Day By Day, Night After Night' but with coverage only through 1982. For those of you who have already read the 2008 book, the new release contains additional text and photos. The organization and style of the current book is patterned after the book 'The Complete Beatles Chronology' by Mark Lewisohn. Mr. Hopkins does an excellent job in detailing an almost day-by-day account of Stevie's life through 1982. There are many, many photographs of Stevie, family and friends, including photos of some of Stevie's equipment, which are now in the possession of Mr. Hopkins. It is obvious that Mr. Hopkins has close ties with some of the SRV family (where else would he get pictures of Stevie as a baby). For those of you who are Eric Johnson fans, Mr. Hopkins' book has accounts of Eric with some interesting photos. After all, there was only 6-weeks difference in age between Stevie and Eric and they were both based out of Austin, Texas. I strongly suspect that a followup book on the years 1983 - 1990 will be written in the near future.

As the first reviewer (J.Mark Fewell, from Dallas), pointed out, the author of this book, has already, written previous books, about Stevie Ray Vaughan. Now, this "Book #1", "Day by Day, Night, After Night, His Early Years", along with the soon to be released, "Book #2", "Stevie Ray Vaughan, "His Last Years", is suppose to be the "Ultimate", 2 book, series about the life and times, of the late/great, blues guitarist, and singer, Stevie Ray Vaughan. This "Book #1", is very detailed, and is very well illustrated. "Book #1 covers SRV's life, up until his first commercial release. So it covers SRV's life from birth in 1954, thru 1982. The author, must have been an "insider", to have had access, to the illustrations, and the information, covered in this book. There is even a copy of SRV's Birth Certificate. This 2 Book, series, is going to be the ultimate, 2 Book Collector's series, for serious, Stevie Ray Vaughan fans. I read about this book, in a music magazine, and about how it along with "Book #2, will definitely be an SRV genuine, "collector's item". This 2 book series on SRV, has been recogized in the music industry as being, "the most detailed account of any musician ever". If you like SRV, then you'll definitely, enjoy this book, and the second book to follow. Thanks!!!

P.S. More information about the author: Craig Hopkins. He is a very devoted Stevie Ray Vaughan fan, and is recognized as the world's foremost, renown scholar on Stevie Ray Vaughan. He has written previous books about SRV. He has been a trial lawyer, and has even sucessfully tried cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. He has been recognized by the Blues Foundation, by being awarded the "Keeping the Blues Alive", award for Blues Literature. He is based in Texas. He has an enormous music memorabilia collection, which includes many of SRV's items. He plans to use his vast amount of music memorabilia to start a museum soon. Thanks again!!!!

There have already been at least a couple of very good biographies written about Stevie Ray Vaughan, and this particular book provides very complementary additional insight and info into the late great guitarist. There is not very much overlap of information compared to previous books...many of the people interviewed for this book were not quoted in the other SRV biographies I have read. Lots of previously unseen photos, and plenty of first-hand stories about how SRV started out as a budding guitarist in Texas in the late 60's and 70's. I find that this part of his life (pre-1983) is most interesting, since much of his life after he became a star is more "public knowledge" already, obviously. Since SRV didn't become famous until he was nearly 30 years old, most fans probably don't consider him a former "teenage prodigy" like Kenny Wayne Shepherd or Jonny Lang. However, this book reveals that he was just that...a teenage guitar monster dropping jaws right and left...he just didn't have the widespread exposure of KWS or Lang, obviously, back in the late 60's in Dallas.

Anyway, an INDISPENSABLE book for all SRV fans so they can see that Stevie wasn't always the majestic guitar god in fancy garb and hat...he did indeed pay his dues! :-)

I have read "caught in the crossfire" a biography on SRV a couple years ago and that did a pretty good job. This book covers everything that one didn't and was very glad I purchased it and can't wait for the 2nd half to come out this fall of 2011. A must buy if you want information and pictures of Stevie you can't find anywhere else.

I preordered the full book from Craig Hopkins and could not wait to receive it. Ironically, it arrived just after my birthday a couple of years ago when it was released. I could not put it down. I read it from cover-to-cover. I have read several accounts of Stevie's life, and this is more of an almanac. This shows listings from calendars that were used to schedule the band's dates. Unlike a lot of other books about Stevie, this had the full blessing of Jimmie and Martha Vaughan, as well as Tommy Shannon, and Chris Layton. Craig did a phenomenal job in arranging the details of each page. I also recommend Cutter Brandenburg's book "You Can't Stop A Comet" as he was one of Stevie's closest friends growing up and first road manager. I feel that these two books combined will provide more insight into Stevie than any other!
