5.0 out of 5 stars Sugar vs. Stevia: cost to sweeten your cup of coffee or tea, July 22, 2009

Here's an interesting comparison - the cost to sweeten your cup of coffee or tea using sugar and Stevia. I recently started using Stevia after a stint with Aspertame (gave me head aches) and Splenda. At Amazon Market Place, a 5-lb (2,268 grams) bag of Domino Granulated Sugar is $14.08. At this price, the price of 1 teaspoon (4.2 grams of sugar per tsp) of sugar is 2.6 cents. If you're like me, I typically use 2 tsp per cup which will double the price to 5.2 cents. The price of Stevia 2000 packet listed at Amazon is $63.50 with each packet containing 1 gram (which is equivalent to 2 tsp or 8.4 grams of sugar in terms of sweetness - forget the 200x sweeter claim, what counts is how much to achieve equivalent sweetness). The price to sweeten with Stevia at this price is 3.2 cents. So:

2 tsp Domino Granulated Sugar from 5 pound box from Amazon is 5.2 cents.
2 tsp equivalent sweetness Stevia 2000 pack from Amazon is 3.2 cents.

I quit using sugar for coffee and tea to cut down on calories but it's nice to know that you're also cutting down on cost, too.

Delivery was fast and the product arrived as advertised. Would certainly order from them again. (But it will take a lot of time to use up all this Stevia!)

I've been enjoying my Stevia purchase so much, I've ordered another bag for a dear friend. Stevia does have a slight aftertaste, but the health benefits and safety of it are well worth while - compared to the artificial sweeteners. No wonder the FDA fought so hard to ban Stevia when people around the world have been using it for decades! The big manufacturers won't get their zillion percent mark-up on a natural product as easily as an artificially produced one.

For those who drink iced tea or another "home-made" chilled beverage - I've found a good balance using Stevia. For a gallon of iced tea I used 10-11 Stevia packets and only 1/4 cup of sugar. It's plenty sweet and considerably lower calories than the usual method of sweetening. (Adjust for your own taste of course) For example: Kool-Aid suggests 1 cup of sugar for 1 packet of Kool-Aid, added to two quarts of water (a half gallon for our non-cooking friends). That would yield a much higher calorie count, not to mention dental worries for parents. I've had other people taste my iced tea with Stevia, and they like it.

Thanks for the great product - I will continue to share it with others to spread the good word!

This product was recommended for a friend with diabetes (low carb and great taste). After a friend told me that the taste is far better than that of any other sugar substitute tried to date, I ordered the product in bulk hoping for a lifetime supply. In my personal opinion this is the best sugar substitute and at a good price here.
