Book Description

November 9, 2005
With films such as The Godfather, Star Wars, The Sting, Rocky, Apocalypse Now, Jaws and M*A*S*H, the 1970s is now considered the second Golden Age of Hollywood. There is renewed interest in some of the decade's most durable genres, including disaster films and blaxsploitation flicks, allowing viewers to rediscover early performances from major stars such as Jeff Bridges, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton. Today's major film directors also got their start in this period, including Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Spielberg. The Stewardess is Flying the Plane! is a lavishly illustrated, fun and informative look at more than 400 films of the decade - not just classics like The Godfather or Taxi Driver, but cult favourites like Kansas City Bomber and even spectacular flops like Lost Horizon. With an introduction by Peter Bogdanovich, hundreds of never- before-published photographs and new interviews with key participants in the '70s film industry, The Stewardess is Flying the Plane! is the most comprehensive overview of this fascinating era of American film.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Beatrice.com book-blogger Hogan opens his glossy, thematic narrative of '70s movies with an illuminating conversation with Peter Bogdanovich, director of The Last Picture Show and other iconic films from that decade. After all, it was Bogdanovich and his cohort of directors—Cassavetes, Coppola, Scorsese and others—who broke from the bloated studio system in favor of smaller scale, more experimental filmmaking. Bogdanovich explains that their new style used "essentially classic American narrative film technique but not looking at things in a conventional, cleaned-up way." Hogan then indulges in a free-form romp through various film genres—science fiction, disasters, war, thrillers, westerns, etc.—mentioning more than 400 movies. In a few words or phrases about the plot or star, Hogan reveals quirky details on the making of the films, from inspiration to budgets to box office results. While the text is engrossing and written with verve, the photos are the real delight. Some are candid shots from the set, others promotional stills, and a few—enough, perhaps—are favorite scenes from favorite films (like M*A*S*H's version of The Last Supper). As coffee-table books go, this is one of the year's most fun. (Nov.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Fascinating, January 13, 2006
This review is from: The Stewardess Is Flying the Plane!: American Films of the 1970s (Hardcover)
Growing up during the 70's, I saw many of these movies but was oblivious to their histories and the prevalent themes of the time. Hogan's writing is elegant and he takes on the subject with a thorough directness suited for any reader. Overall this is a beautiful book, the photos are gorgeous -- it makes me want to rent movies I had long forgotten and introduces me to a number of new ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coffee Table or Serious Reading, November 14, 2005

This review is from: The Stewardess Is Flying the Plane!: American Films of the 1970s (Hardcover)
It's not just a coffee table book, though, if you're in the mood to flip through for fun when you can't find your reading glasses, it will certainly do- but it is a serious text about the why and who of this era or film- odd-ball details, quotes and special pages for the BIG stars (even Charlton Heston, who was a main crush of yours truly before I learned about his politics).

This is the kind of book you can buy for a friend who loves movies or buy for yourself. Either way, leave it out when people come over. You will talk, laugh, and if you're old enough- remember that date who talked through Vanishing Point so you had to go see it again to savor Barry Newman without interference. Highly recommended.

The Stewardess is Flying the Plane!American Films of the 1970's:

Is a okay book,a quick glance at some picked movies, including some of my favorites: Dirty Harry,Corvette Summer, not really much for text except some info and the so-called "counterculture" of some movies(boring and typical). overall okay book and nothing you don't already know.
