4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic book on various stick fighting methods for self-defense.
Many tradtional martial artists ignore Bruce Tegner's books, but I have found most of them very informative and practical. This book is one of his best because it covers a wide variety of stick like objects that you can use for self-defense. The fact that the techniques are basic methods, rather than advanced complex approaches, makes this book highly practical for the...

Many tradtional martial artists ignore Bruce Tegner's books, but I have found most of them very informative and practical. This book is one of his best because it covers a wide variety of stick like objects that you can use for self-defense. The fact that the techniques are basic methods, rather than advanced complex approaches, makes this book highly practical for the average person who does not want to spend years training with a weapon in order to be able to defend themselves. This book covers use of the cane, yawara stick, walking stick and other objects you can use for self-defense on the street. In conclusion, this is a book for anyone interested in using the stick for self-defense.

Rating: 4 stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton).

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite book on the topic, November 24, 2011

This can be a hard one to track down at a reasonable price, but I feel it's worth the search. Tegner's _Stick Fighting: Self Defense_ might be my favorite book on the topic (and, yes, I have Hatsumi and Chambers' book - as well as about a linear foot of other stickfighting books) from terms of approachability.

Many such books contain mysticism and an overuse of foreign terms for no purpose other than impressing the reader with what a masterly sensei the author is: instead, _Stick Fighting: Self Defense_ contains great photos and practical text. Good stuff!

I'm by no means saying this should be the _only_ book on the topic in an aficionado's library, but this is a good place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Seminal Work, April 25, 2008
This review is from: Stick Fighting: Self-Defense (Paperback)
This book along with the Tegner's others are seminal books on the subjects. I grew up with these books in the sixties and studied them assiduously. This particular book was one of my favorites.

Much of what I learned in this book I later would utilize in actual practice while under duress of some sort. I spent many an afternoon and evening pounding concrete blocks with tatami mats, buckets of sand, rice and gravel. I was able to develope my hands into formidable weapons based on my study of these books. There were not that many books on the subject available at the time. I tip my hat to Bruice Tegner for providing me with a lot of knowledge and inspiration in my youth.

5.0 out of 5 stars stick fighting, April 25, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stick Fighting: Self-Defense (Paperback)
As someone who is new to self defense I bought the book for information on cane/kubotan fighting. As it was written in the early 1970's some of the techniques have changed slightly as street self defense has evolved. Would what I learned from the book work in the real world-yes. Someone who has studied martial arts for years would already know instinctively the strikes and blocks but for some one who is new the book is a good supplement to self defense lessons
