Love the Stick Man!,
By
This review is from: Stick Man (Hardcover)
Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler have done it again with this wonderful tale of the perils of Stick Man! Both you and your child will love Stick Man's humorous adventure in the world and his eventual safe return to his wife and family. This is a great book as we head towards Christmas since it features Santa (aka Stuck Man) stuck in a chimney. If you enjoyed other books by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, such as The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo's Child, or Room On The Broom, then this one is for you.

Stick with Family,
By
This review is from: Stick Man (Hardcover)
A great book for youngsters to read during winter/X'mas time, STICK MAN from the artists of ROOM ON THE BOOM offers another unique story about the family tree dad who is content with his beautiful Stick Lady Love and stick children three, is one day chased away from home by a dog and hurls into worlds of danger. No one can see he is "a stick man" that is needed and loved by a family - the girl throws him into the river, the swan weaves him into nest, the man makes him a sandcastle flag, the children makes him into a pen, a bow and a boomerang. Poor stick man has suffered and loses his hope of returning home and as he finally gets picked up as a stick to be burned for the fireplace, only a miracle can save him. And miracle does happen on Christmas night! The Stick Man is in the right place to save the "Stuck Man"(the gift-delivering Santa stuck inside the chimney). Carrying home by a grateful Santa for his family reunion, this book ends with a heartwarming note that may teach children to use their imagination and extend their compassion and love to be gentle to all living things for even a twig may belong to a family. The readers will have fun looking at the stick family holding hands, carrying their baby for a picnic and enjoy quality playtime together just like all of us.

My mom is a librarian in an elementary school. She brought this book home while we were visiting and my kids love it! We purchased it when we left her house because they did not want to leave the Stick Man book behind. It is cute and easy to read. Two thumbs up! (My kids are between the ages of 2 and 6.)

Favorite books...,
This review is from: Stick Man (Hardcover)
We love all of the books by these authors, and this one does not disappoint. A great little story, despite the Xmas theme, that can be read no matter the time of year. I love the sing-songy writing of the book (which many of their books have) and the illustrations are so detailed and bright. If you have liked their other books, you will also enjoy this one.

Stick Man is the ideal family man. He is a loving partner and father and will do anything to get back to his family tree where he lives with his Stick Lady Love and their stick children three. In beautiful illustrations and wonderful rhyming verse we live through the trials of stick man as he is thrown to a dog, thrown in the river, put in a swan's nest, washed up on a beach and used in more interesting ways.It will become a family favourite for those lucky enough to discover it.

Our family have been fans of Julia Donaldson and Axel Schefler since first being given a copy of the Gruffalo 7 or 8 years ago. We have most of their books and love the bright and expressive drawings and the fun rhyming and lyrical text.
If you are a fan you may notice that Stickman first appears in the Gruffalo's child as the toy that the Gruffalo's child carries with her through her adventures with the terrible mouse. And whats more, careful eyes will find the Gruffalo hiding in one of the illustrations in Stickman... Although we love all of the Donaldson/Schefler books (and you can't really think of one without the other) this is among our favorites. The great story of Stickman being mistaken for a stick by dogs, swans and children who all want him for something else is accessible and touching. There is a scary bit in which Stickman finds himself laid onto the logs in a fireplace, but all works out in the end. If you are new to these books I highly recommend the Gruffalo, A Squash and A Squeeze, and Stickman as the most out-standing of a great series of books.

I bought this book for my 3 y/o daughter and as with other books by Julia Donaldson, she loves it. The story is original, smart and well written in the form of rhyme, but is also simple enough so a small child can follow it without getting bored. The illustrations are colorful and fun and my dd likes to follow them and tell the story herself. Overall a great book that will be read over and over again.

My 3 and a half year old son just simply adores Stick Man. Every night I send my son to his book shelf to select books for his night time reading, and since we have purchased this book, it has been selected every single night. We have loved all of Julia Donaldson's books (we own Snail and the Whale, The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo's child, Room on the Broom, The Spiffiest Giant in town and Monkey Puzzle) and this one is just as popular with me. I enjoy reading it to my son. As with all her stories, they are just the right length (not too long and not too short), have an engaging plot, really nice illustrations and appeal both to adults and children alike. Stick man has quite an adventure as he is mistaken for a stick and is then picked up one after another by a dog for a game of fetch, a girl for throwing into the river, a swan for building his nest, a father for a mast on a sand castle, a boy for an arm for a snowman and choir singers for firewood. He misses his stick family and wishes to be back with them. He finally makes it back home (I wont spoil your reading by saying how) just in time to celebrate Christmas with them. The story rhymes and the story line is very creative. I cant wait to get my hands on more of her books.
