4.0 out of 5 stars Crimson Territory
"Stickman" is an excellent album that bookends the polished "Resonator" quite well -- with its more jam based approach and phenomenal bass playing. 2.0 out of 5 stars A boatload of flatted 5ths.....
Well, I guess I expected a lot more from this great bassist and Stick player. I have only listened to it once and I do not know if I will even give it another. Not up to his usual quality efforts. But, it is sort of cool if you groove on flatted 5ths and are not burned out on them.

"Stickman" is an excellent album that bookends the polished "Resonator" quite well -- with its more jam based approach and phenomenal bass playing. Moreover, one cannot help but compare it to latter Crimson albums -- many sources point to the drummer Pat Mastelotto -- yet I feel that is only partial for the music features a dynamic, proto sound that easily falls into Crimson territory, and that is not a complaint. Furthermore, it is astounding what the drum/bass duo accomplishes when all havoc breaks loose with their instruments, which is every track. Highly Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very cool., August 23, 2008

It's about time Tony Levin treated us to this! An album of unabashed Stick playing that just feels good and never bores the listener with chops shredding or "clever" renditions of tunes that were never intended for this instrument. Tony is considered a pioneer for this reason, and still remains one of the most original bass players out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating & Hard Core, May 12, 2008
This review is from: Stick Man (Audio CD)
A real masterpiece if you're into Crimson and intense instrumentals. Also loved the track "Slow Glide", which is a departure from the brutal beatdwon that's the remainder of the CD. Wicked bass and stick riffs over complex and cool drum beats. I love this CD, although you must be ready for it. Very heavy and there's not a better bass player than Tony Levin.

Oh boy...You know, Tony is the reason I first picked up a bass years ago...and Vic Wooten is the reason I gave up...however, this cd was almost physically painful to listen to...I admit, World Diary, per example annoyed me a bit at first, but after a few listens never left the changer in my car. This however...I dunno. Best way to describe it is take the Bozzio/Sheehan record...and remove Bozzio and Sheehan and add Tony. That made no sense...its exactly like THAT record except its clearly TLEV. The vocals are annoyingly just like Terry's on the Bozzio/Sheehan. And Tony...please explain to me...youve worked with Pat Mastellotto, Steve Gadd, and Bill Bruford...WHY did you have to use fake friggin drum beats like any of the rap 'artists' that emerge daily? Im sure Pat wouldve stayed in studio for another ten minutes to hit random objects for a song instead of using a damn fake drumBEAT. Overall this record was painful to listen to and, even as an absolute fan of Tony and everything(else) he has done, I still have to give this a bad rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!, November 14, 2011

Bought this CD after I heard Levin Torn White. Very similar records with Levin Torn White being a bit more hardcore than Stick Man. Nonetheless, this is an incredible record with wicked drumming by Pat Mastelotto. A must buy for prog. heads.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, July 16, 2011
This review is from: Stick Man (Audio CD)
Tony tears it up on this release. While Tony plays a number of instruments on this album, Pat Mastellotto is fabulous as always playing drums on most of the tracks. Rivers of Light is overall a more subdued piece than other songs, but this is a very strong release with no throw away tracks whatsoever. Can't wait to see Stick Men in October!

Stick man is o.k. just o.k., It is not as musical as Resonator, Stick man is deeply rooted in music fundamentals from/of King Crimson.
I'm rating this effort a four star, after a soild week of listening to the album.

It's Tony Levin. Do you really need anymore? Played for King Crimson, Yes, John Lennon, Paul Simon, I've lost count! He played for alot of bands. Google him. He's awesome!
