Chris Joss is the most amazing Master of Funk alive. He can make funky music with any and all sounds - beats, bass, guitar, sitar, flutes, strings, or keys.Sticks is extremely infectious party music. It is a hybrid between Dr. Rhythm and Teraphonic Overdubs (not to discredit or downplay Spiked and The Man With a Suitcase). Which means if you like Chris Joss's most original and wild sounds, then Sticks will be right up your alley. Shoudl be the next album you buy, without hesitation!

Sticks is another very groovy Joss release. Would you expect anything less from him? There is lots of good sitar playing on this. He seems to feature it on this album. I am bias towards spiked and man with a suitcase but this is worth the purchase and listen. Basically you can't go wrong with any of CJ and his work. Think 70's blaxploitation soundtracks and you'll get the idea. Let yourself be transformed into another time and space. Buy this what are you waiting for you will not be disappointed.

I am a big Joss fan. I have everything he's put out since the Dr. Rhythm days and sing his praises to anyone that is looking for new tunes that are not within the mainstream. His creativity and output are always good to great. That said, something about 'Sticks' just doesn't do it for me like his other releases. Rather than this sounding like a Chris Joss project, it sounds like an ESL project with Joss flavor. There is a difference. I can applaud him wanting to go in a different direction than the other outings, but I'm puzzled as to why it sounds so MUCH like ESL releases from up to 3 years ago. Whether this was the idea of Joss or the ESL label, I don't know. But I have enough ESL music in my collection to know that much of this music borrows from prior ideas that have been spun from their factory ... multiple times in some cases. Good music, this - which is why I give it a solid 4 stars for those seeking that blend of styles that the prior reviewer correctly indicated. But Chris Joss set the bar high for himself with his prior releases. As a fan of both ESL and Joss, I expected more originality, more Joss-isms ... just more, period. In short: if you're a die-hard Chris Joss fan like me, look at 'Sticks' as the latest general ESL release rather than a Chris Joss release. You won't be disappointed in the slightest. |
