5.0 out of 5 stars Drum-lovers and Drummer-lovers, alike... will all LOVE this book!, December 29, 2009
This review is from: Sticks 'n' Skins: A Photography Book About the World of Drumming (Hardcover)
Whether you are a drummer, or just have a love and appreciation for the drums and the musicians who play the drums... you simply MUST get this book. Jules Follett and her wonderful team have continued the dedicated photography work of Lissa Wales, who was beloved in the drum community for her support and love of drummers around the world. Jules has brilliantly captured the love and spirit and sense of community that exists in the drumming world, and this book is being embraced by all who love and live by the heartbeat of the drum. It's a one-of-a-kind collection of amazing photography and information about hundreds of the world's top drummers, of which I am humbled and honored to have been included. This collection of art is perfect for any drummer, drumming student, music fan... and perfect for any music/corporate office waiting room, studio, live music venue green rooms, listening room, coffee houses, music stores... anywhere that music lovers congregate and hang out. Also a great reference book for schools, music conservatories, universities, etc... There will probably never be another book to rival this amazing collection of drummers... I'm sure you'll find yourself going back to it over and over and you'll be glad you got it. And you'll want to keep it forever!

This review is from: Sticks 'n' Skins: A Photography Book About the World of Drumming (Hardcover)
Sticks 'n' Skins is one of the finest photographic books on drumming and drummers that I have ever seen. Apart for the absolutely beautiful, artistic and pleasingly aesthetic feel of the book, it is an enormous repository of information about our art form, representing many genres of music and stylistically different drummers and percussionists and I believe it will be viewed as time passes, as an important historical document about the subject.

This review is from: Sticks 'n' Skins: A Photography Book About the World of Drumming (Hardcover)
This is a must check-out coffee table photography book for every drummer and fans of drums & drummers! Photographer Jules Follett and her Fotos By Folletts team have captured the personality of over 500 drummers (I am truly honored to be a small part of this amazing accomplishment) Not only are there amazing photos by Jules and company, also included are legendary shots by the late Lissa Wales. (Lissa was very well known & loved in the drumming community and left us too soon) It's very special & touching that Jules has dedicated the opening pages to Lissa with a special tribute to her photos. I highly recommend this beautiful art of work! For more info please visit [...] (or click above and buy one...or two:)

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST HAVE for all drummers!, December 14, 2009

This review is from: Sticks 'n' Skins: A Photography Book About the World of Drumming (Hardcover)
You don't have to be a drummer to appreciate the beautiful photography and in-depth artist bios in "Sticks 'n' Skins", but if you ARE a drummer, you'll definitely want to own this book! Jules Follett and Jamie Pastor have done an outstanding job capturing the spirit of drummers of all styles, playing drums and the drumming community, in this book. There is also a section dedicated to photographer Lissa Wales, who the drumming community lost in 2005. Lissa was loved by everyone in the drumming community and her work is memorialized in a beautiful tribute at the front of the book.

"Sticks 'n' Skins" is chock full (over 500 pages!) of drummers and percussionists from around the world and every style of music, including legends and drumming stars such as Buddy Rich, Tony Williams, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker, Charlie Watts, Tre Cool, Tommy Lee, Simon Phillips, Joey Kramer, Jeff Porcaro, Jim Keltner, Chad Smith (to name only a few). It also includes behind the scenes photos from Drum Industry events such as PASIC, the Modern Drummer Festival, Montreal Drumfest, The 2008 Zildjian Drummers Achievement Awards and NAMM, as well as the movers and shakers within the Drum Industry. I received my copy in October and still haven't read it from cover to cover - there's just so much in it! You really need to own this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars For The Drummer In Your Heart, December 13, 2009
This review is from: Sticks 'n' Skins: A Photography Book About the World of Drumming (Hardcover)
This beautiful book of photography truly speaks to the drummer in your heart. Each page contains an enlightening glimpse into the world of one person's unique story of his or her passion for the instrument of the drum and/or drum set. Over 400 drummers are included, and while you may possibly be able to think of a few who do not grace a page, you just know all are included thanks to the overwhelming sense of community and brotherhood represented through the author's humbling approach. Jules Follett has not only accomplished a task far beyond vision with this amazingly well crafted "coffee table book of drummers," but she has gracefully dedicated the entire work to the memory of yet another photographer whom she only knew as her Guardian Angel... Lissa Wales, and included a complete section with some of Lissa's special timeless moments with more keepers of time. Congratulations to Jules on an adventure well taken, and to all who are fortunate enough to spend time enjoying its blessed contents. Anyone who has even a hint of a drummer in your heart will surely treasure this historical work of art for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars LET YOURSELF BECOME PART OF SOMETHING, December 12, 2009
This review is from: Sticks 'n' Skins: A Photography Book About the World of Drumming (Hardcover)
Carlos, what a great review! I have recently seen the book and enjoyed it from cover to cover. Never before has any publication revealed so honestly the real motivation and sense of community shared by all of these great drum and percussion professionals and enthusiasts. Each one of them is a special brick in the drum and percussion community wall. Those who were featured in this book seemed to be there not because of their level of success in the profession but because they are the true representatives of this unique community called drumming.
The love, the effort, the dedication and the artistry put forth by Jules Follett and her staff is nothing short of amazing. Every great photo and inspiring story will immediately connect to the part of us longing to be involved and associated with a group that does something to serve a greater good.
Of all the ways one can find to be inspired to live life and enjoy every minute it, this is definitely one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Come Face to Face with your favorite drummers., December 14, 2009

This review is from: Sticks 'n' Skins: A Photography Book About the World of Drumming (Hardcover)
The most detailed Drum book I have ever seen. The pictures are amazing and you will learn more about the tight knit drumming brotherhood here then in any other book . The book is a diary and photo album starting with the greats from the big band era though the now rock and roll. You will see Jazz, Classical, latin , reggae, all styles and the players that gave the beat to the music you love. A great gift for the youngster that has been bitten by the drum bug !!!! and a beautiful collection of all the drummers the more advanced drummer has listen to.

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sticks 'n' Skins: A Photography Book About the World of Drumming (Hardcover)
Since the introduction of the modern day drum set there have been people with profound vision's that have furthered the art of drumming. Some of which that come to mind..Gene Krupa's "Sing ,Sing,Sing - Buddy Rich's - West Side Story Opus, Tony William's explosive debut with Miles Davis , Steve Gadd's rudimental excellence with Steely Dan & Chick Corea , the amazing studio silky grooves of Jeff Porcaro and the odd metered mastery of Neil Peart who also combined his love for the written word while recording his master pieces that will live on for generations to come..
Jules Follett took those inspirations and created another true master piece within the literary world that captures the true spirit of Drummers. This IS the definative photography book on Drummers. Each page captures the HEART, the SOUL and most importantly the VOICE of each person that was blessed to be a part of this project.
Buy this book because it WILL become a part of drumming history and we have Jules Follett to thank for that..
