Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Sticks and Stones, the third record from Florida emo-punkers New Found Glory, might wear its broken heart on its sleeve, but that doesn't mean it has to pretend to be mature. No, Blink-182's first choice of opening band have a firm grasp of the puerile: Sticks and Stones churns out dumb punk thrills at such a breakneck pace, you'd swear they were going out of fashion. The chugging "It's Been a Summer" does Blink as well as Travis, Mark, and Tom do themselves, while "Head-On Collision" displays the group's tender emo side, frontman Jordan Pundik smarting at a vicious relationship spat. "It feels like I'm bruised and broken / From our head-on collision," he sobs, as guitars crunch and blunder madly in the background. Thing is, although some of the tunes are spot on--particularly, the lovestruck "My Friend's Over You" and the moshpit-friendly "Something I Call Personality"--there's little to radically distinguish New Found Glory from their peers. If you're a diehard pop-punk fan, you've probably got records like this--and better--in your collection already. --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, August 25, 2002
This review is from: Sticks and Stones (Audio CD)
This was my first NFG CD, and I decided to get it after hearing "My Friends Over You" on the radio. And, half expecting to be disappointed, I was blown away. From the outstanding intro to the hidden track, it was amazing. Here's the track by track rundown:

1. Understatement- This is the way an album should start. Great lyrics and a very memorable chorus. 10/10
2. My Friends Over You- The hits keep coming. Another great track. 10/10
3. Sonny- A slower song about Jordan's grandfather who died, and it's just as good as the first two. 9.75/10
4. Something I Call Personality- The shortest song on the track, and probably one of the worst. 7.25/10
5. Head On Collision- I didn't really like this song at first, but after listening to it a few times the deeper lyrics got to me, and it's one of the better ones now. 9/10
6. It's Been a Summer- Nice intro, and a fairly good rest of the song too. 8.75/10
7. Forget My Name- A great song with a sing-along-to chorus, and the ending blends nicely into the next track. 9.5/10
8. Never Give Up- Starts out similar to Sonny, but that's where the similarity ends up. A fast paced song with a memorable chorus. 8.75/10
9. The Great Houdini- Seems like the songs under three minutes are the worst. That's not to say it's not that bad a song. 7.25/10
10. Singled Out- Takes the cake for coolest intro on the CD, and the rest of the song is pretty good too. 8.5/10
11. Belated- Another nice song with a chorus you can sing along to. 8.5/10

12. The Story So Far- A great way to end the CD with an awesome chorus and good lyrics. Stay tuned to about 25 minutes into the song to hear a pretty funny hidden track. 10/10

So, if you like punk/rock, NFG won't disappoint you. I had liked only one of their poppier songs and I was still impressed. This CD will be in your rotation for a long time after you get it.

Well, NfG is my favorite band and this is thier best Cd so far. Drive Thru Record's best band!
This is the playlist and their ratings for "Sticks and Stones'
1. Understatement-10/10-Great leadoff song, latest single, my favorite song on the album.
2. My Friends Over You-10/10-First single, awesome lyrics, great song
3. Sonny-9.5/10-Not as good as the first two songs but still an awesome song, kind of sad beacause it is about Jordans grandfather that died.
4. Something I Call Personality-9.8/10-The best music on the Cd, lyrics are good but song is only 2:40 long. I like the when they say "Lets Go" and "Hell Yeah"
5. Head On Collision-9.4/10-Second single on the Cd, very good lyrics but the chorus could be better.
6. It's Been a Summer-10/10-Second best song on the album, song about a summer where he meets a girl.
7. Forget My Name-8.5/10-Good song with good drums and overall music.
8. Never Give Up-9/10-Not the best but really good.
9. The Great Houdini-8.5/10-Different song, still good though.
10. Singled Out-8/10-Probably my least fvorite song on the album but still a great song.
11. Belated-8.2/10-A little better that "Singled Out" a slower paced song.
12. The Story So Far-10/10-A great way to end the Cd, makes you want to listen to the Cd over and over again. If you fast forward to the end of this song there is the band talking, very funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars NFG'S best work to date..., June 11, 2002
By
danny (Crofton, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sticks and Stones (Audio CD)
Wow. Even those who may have shunned off the self-titled CD may want to have a listen to "Sticks and Stones." NFG has scored again, with 12 incredibly well-written tracks, with the standard infectious melodies and lyrical content.

Jordan still loves to write about girls, but these songs show a maturity that lacked on the self titled, "Nothing Gold Can Stay" and "It's All About The Girls." The guitar tones on this album are greatly improved, as is the guitar work of Chad and Steve in general. Ian's bass work is also quite impressive this time around. Jordan's voice is at it's prime, and even edgy in spots.

Guest appearances from Mark Hoppus, and members of Alkaline Trio among others are a cool addition to an already great cd. While the same "fun" element from their previous cd's is here...the songwriting on "Sticks and Stones" is NFG's best...no question about it.

My favorite tracks so far are "Head on Collision", "The Story So Far", and the single, "My Friends Over You." However, there is not a weak track to be found here.

NFG fans will not be dissapointed, and those who haven't ever picked up a NFG release...this is a great place to start.

Good work, guys!
