Book Description

October 4, 2011
Many of the statistics you read about teenagers and faith can be alarming. Recent studies show that 40-50 percent of kids who are connected to a youth group throughout their senior year will fail to stick with their faith in college. As youth workers are pouring their time and energy into the students in their ministries, they are often left wondering if they've done enough to equip their students to carry their faith into adulthood. Fuller Youth Institute has done extensive research in the area of youth ministry and teenage development. In Sticky Faith, the team at FYI presents youth workers with both a theological/philosophical framework and practical programming ideas that develop long-term faith in teenagers. Each chapter presents a summary of FYI's quantitative and qualitative research, along with the implications of this research, including program ideas suggested and tested by youth ministries nationwide. This resource will give youth pastors what they need to help foster a faith that sticks with all the teenagers in their group long after they've left the youth room.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Most churches in America would give anything to develop a deep, growing faith in kids that "sticks" and continues to mature long-term. That interest is dwarfed only by parents' desire to develop a deep, growing faith in their own kids.

Yet both national leaders with broad spheres of influence as well as local, grassroots practitioners are waking up to the reality that almost half of their graduating seniors struggle deeply with their faith in college.  Offering a few special "Senior Seminars" or giving seniors a "graduation Bible" and hoping for the best are both too little and too late.

In response to this problem, the Fuller Youth Institute (FYI) has conducted the College Transition Project, a national longitudinal study following over 500 high school seniors during their first three years in college.  The goals of this research are to understand the dynamics of youth group graduates' transition to college and to identify the relationships and best practices in youth ministries, churches, and families that can help set students on a trajectory of lifelong faith and service.

FYI's research confirms that it's never too early or too late to start developing faith that continues to grow and lasts.  Sticky Faith gives parents and leaders both a theological/philosophical framework and a host of practical relationship and programming ideas that develop long-term faith in teenagers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend for all youth workers! October 24, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Whereas Sticky Faith focuses on what parents can do to help their kids faith stick for life, Sticky Father Youth Worker Edition takes the same study and applies it to those who work in a church context. There were so many great ideas for youth pastors and youth workers throughout the entire book. I particularly liked the sections on how to prepare seniors for college and helping your whole church buy into the vision of sticky faith.

The overwhelming highlight of this book was chapter 2, The Sticky Gospel. This book is worth it just for this chapter. It was by far the best explanation of how to teach the gospel to teens I have ever read. So many teenagers adopt the gospel of sin management, but this chapter was rich with ways to help teens grasp the deep truths of the gospel and its implication in a proper way.

Even for those who have read Sticky Faith, this book is different enough that I would highly recommend it for all youth workers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read October 4, 2011
By April D
Format:Paperback
If you've been in youth ministry for more than 1 year, you know the importance of what you do but also how difficult it is to measure growth. Sticky Faith gives research-based practical ideas for youth workers to bolster confidence that what we do matters. Specific, practical, encouraging, and challenging - this is a must read for all youth workers (staff and volunteers!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstandingly Comprehensive Resource May 31, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
After reading all the depressing books about teens losing their faith, this book was a breath of fresh air. Instead of focusing on the reason teens walk away from faith, this material focuses in on what has helped teens maintain their faith. The ideas for responding to the data are excellent. And the amazing thing is that there is also a book for parents and a curriculum to use with teens. So you not only get a number of practical ideas in the book, but you also are able to access great material to help pass on these ideas to parents and teens. The discussions we've had with our volunteers, parents and teens have all been amazing thanks to this material! I highly recommend it. Buy all your volunteers a copy. Get one for every parent in the group and grab the teen curriculum to start a class with them!
