4.0 out of 5 stars The only option for real Thai sticky rice.
All you get with this set is a bamboo-woven cone and a light aluminum pot, but it can be useful. I now use the pot to steam all sorts of things with a Chinese multi-layer bamboo steamer on top. The pot's thin, uncoated aluminum walls are perfect for quickly boiling water for steam (I don't recommend cooking in the water). Please note that Thai sticky rice (white or black)...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sticky Rice Steamer Pot
Item is much larger than I had anticipated from looking at the picture. Seems like you could feed a small village with this thing. Way too big. Getting a mediocre review solely based on size. Haven't actually used the product.

The pot's thin, uncoated aluminum walls are perfect for quickly boiling water for steam (I don't recommend cooking in the water). Please note that Thai sticky rice (white or black) is long-grain and a different breed than Chinese or Japanese "sweet rice". Sticky rice is impossible to get right without this basket; if you want that real south-east asian taste this is probably the best deal online right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sticky Rice!, December 1, 2008
This review is from: Sticky Rice Steamer Pot and Basket
After spending a lot of time in Thailand, I became hooked on sticky rice and I was lucky enough to find an asian food store that sells sticky rice just down the road from me! The problem was, I couldn't seem to get it right with my own steaming methods. This rice steaming basket is exactly what I used when I was in Thailand, so it was easy for me to use it. Words of advice...

1. Like others have said, make sure you have true Thai sticky rice or else you will just have plain old rice.
2. Make sure you rinse the rice until the water runs clear and then soak overnight...and make sure you put it in a container that the cats can't get into or else you will be cleaning up rice for weeks...oops!
3. Wrap the rice in cheese cloth, it makes things so much easier!
4. Make sure you use a lid that fits close to the rice. I use the lid off of my small sauce pan.
5. Enjoy!! I like my sticky rice with Thai sweet/hot sauce :)

This review is from: Sticky Rice Steamer Pot and Basket
This is a fantastic product.. amazingly I had to order it from Amazon USA and get friends to bring it over to the UK... once you have got the real Thai glutinous rice you just soak it overnight then pour it into the basket and steam for 20-25 minutes and it is perfect every time!! If you like cooking Thai food this is an absolute must!!
Please start to supply this product to the UK .. it is magic

4.0 out of 5 stars The ONLY way to cook Thai Sticky Rice, December 12, 2008
This review is from: Sticky Rice Steamer Pot and Basket
I've made Thai sticky rice a few times and this pot and basket makes the best rice. I tried it in a rice cooker and just in a pan in it always came out like a gelatinous blob. This design is simple and works perfect, for the authentic taste and texture.

The only downside is that it is another device to put away in your kitchen and you really won't use it for anything else besides sticky rice. Also, the basket is a little hard to clean, since it's only bamboo, so i usually just let it dry and flick out the few dried grains that get stuck.

Make sure you use the right rice, and have cheesecloth on hand. Also you'll need a pot lid to put over it since it does not come with one.

If you love Thai food, buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars need some kind of storage cover, April 28, 2009

Like this product. Used it a few times. But wish it could come with some kind of storage bag cuz I can't seem to find anything big enough to cover it so that dust won't collect on it while it's not being used.

If you cook sweet or sticky rice at home you need this pot and basket. Trust me, it'll be the best ten dollars you'll ever spend on an item for your kitchen. 'Nuff said.

This is not a complicated product. Using it is fairly easy. I'm giving it five stars. The basket is large and that is very good because you can pick it up and not get burned by the steam.

Put two inches of water in the pot and boil the water. When steaming put the basket on it with your sticky rice in it. Cover with any lid about the size of the top of the pot not critical. It will make about three cups of steamed rice at a time. About four to six servings? Cooking time is less than twenty minutes maybe more at high elevations.

Soak rice over night or for about six hours. Drain and rinse once. Drain well. Put in basket. Steam about eight minutes. Turn the sticky rice over in the basket. Use a soft plastic bowl scraper to ease the rice mass into a ball you can flip in the basket. Continue steaming another eight minutes. There is a great demo here [...] in case you need help.

Cleaning the basket. Allow basket to cool and dry. Brush or gently scrape any rice off the inside. If you use it every day add any left over rice to the new batch of rice you are making it can be resteamed.

For a fast and hearty meal maybe even healty too, let the pot continue to steam, and in a regular metal steamer basket add chicken pieces and assorted veggie pieces you cut up previously. When cooked add flavorings of your choice and make or buy a dipping sauce.

We ordered this item a few years ago from the Wok Shop. It makes great, traditional sticky rice. A week ago we decided to order two more as Christmas gifts from the Wok Shop through their web site (at the time we weren't aware that they were also selling on Amazon). Several days later we were informed that the item was out of stock and wouldn't be available until mid January 2010. As a consumer and occasional online seller myself, I expect them to keep better control over their inventory. Don't order this item if you need it in a hurry. But, if you can wait, it's just fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only way to go for Thai sticky rice., June 24, 2009

Plain and simple. The pot is made in Thailand for expressly this purpose. Why would you buy anything else? It's stone-age simple. The aluminum pot is durable and thin enough that the water boils quickly for steam, but not so thin to feel cheap. Also, the basket is well made and should hold together for a long time. It will need replacing eventually due to the method of cooking, but not for some time to come.

If you've been to Thailand, and you're hankering for the flavors of that far-away land, this is a sure fire way to have it at home. My wife and I make it at least once a month.

We bought the pot to make sticky rice and boy does it do the job. we read online how to make it and it was so easy. If you love sushi or just sticky rice by itself, you will love making it at home.
