Book Description

August 22, 2002
At the turn of the last century, there was a sense of dissatisfaction within both the American and European photographic communities. In 1902, an avant-garde band of photographers, led by Alfred Stieglitz, began to champion their work as art, rather than as a mere form of documentation, in an exhibit at the National Arts Club in New York. They called themselves the Photo-Secession and are considered to be the best and most original photographers of their day. This group included luminaries such as Edward Steichen, F. Holland Day, Frank Eugene, Gertrude Käsebier, Clarence H. White, and Stieglitz himself.

Stieglitz and the Photo-Secession, 1902 is the first book to re-create that monumental exhibit, with 100 color plates complemented by text from noted art scholar William Innes Homer. This beautiful book and remarkable tribute to Steiglitz and his contemporaries is a must for all lovers and students of photography.

Edited by Catherine Johnson.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Esteemed author Johns (emerita, history of art, Univ. of Pennsylvania; Thomas Eakins: The Heroism of Modern Life) manages to separate this work from the pack of scholarship on quintessential American artist Winslow Homer (1836-1910) by analyzing his life and work from the perspective of developmental psychology. In doing so, she eloquently and caringly traces Homer's art across the psychoanalytical lines of a man evolving from young to middle to late adulthood. Using the developmental theories of Erik Erikson and Daniel Levinson and drawing heavily from Homer's correspondence and the critical responses to his work, Johns offers insight into aspects of Homer's life that informed his art. Johns's analysis cover Homer's illustrations as well as his oil and watercolor paintings but focuses on over 100 images that represent turning points in his life-images that reveal the development of Homer as a person. Though art historians may not agree with all of her interpretations, it is obvious that Johns has opened up new avenues for Homer scholarship. Recommended for academic and museum libraries.-Kraig A. From Booklist

One of the two most famous art exhibitions in American history was displayed at the National Arts Club in New York in March 1902. Titled "American Pictorial Photography," the show was organizer and selector Alfred Stieglitz's most powerful argument for photography as an art medium. Several of those whose work was exhibited-- Edward Steichen, Gertrude Kasebier, Frank Eugene, Clarence H. White, F. Holland Day (represented without his consent by prints Stieglitz owned)--are now revered as founding parents of American art photography, and some of their most familiar images were among those exhibited. This elegant volume presents the original exhibition catalog, which lists 162 items, and all the photos that diligent research could find--86. Homer's introductory essay, wonderfully illustrated with more period photos and covers from photography catalogs and magazines, places the show within the context of Stieglitz's long drive to promote artistic photography and explains such particulars as Stieglitz's ad hoc term photo-secession. A glorious centennial commemoration and must-have Americana. (Oh, that other most famous art exhibition? The Armory show of 1913.) Ray Olson
