4.0 out of 5 stars Not much new, but it brings me hope
This album only has a few new tracks on it, and repeats some from the live album as well as some from The World Needs a Hero. The new tracks included are well worth it (Conjuring, Time). I think this was simply a filler to keep Megadeth fans hopeful until Mustaine can come back (and he will be back, I pray). Love the title and the idea, but I can see how some will be...

First off i'll start with the albums praise. The two new songs "Time/Use the Man" and "The Conjuring" are stellar live tracks, especially the latter. First off i'll start with the albums praise. The two new songs "Time/Use the Man" and "The Conjuring" are stellar live tracks, especially the latter. But other than those two the rest of the cd sounds vaguely familiar. Well that must be because the other live songs are on "Rude Awakening" and half the cd is off of "The World Needs a Hero." If i hadn't heard all this before it would have made a great album. My guess is that this cd was mandatory to fufill Megadeth's contract with Sanctuary. So if your looking to start your DethCollection, start at the first and work your way down the list.

2.0 out of 5 stars What the Heck?, September 20, 2002
Stupid Me, I picked up this CD without reading the track listing before buying. I thought it was just made up of unreleased live tracks. I eventually found out while reading the track listing in my car that half of it is unreleased live tracks, while the rest is old material previously released on The World Needs A Hero album. So Why Bother? Why didn't they release the rare and hard to find tracks like DUKE NUKEM, CROWN OF WORMS, ONE THING, COMING HOME, NEW WORLD ORDER, SYMPHONY OF DESTRUCTION (THE GRISTLE MIX), and TRUST (ECW INSTRUMENTAL REMIX) along with the live tracks. Those tracks are harder than heck to come by, so they should've released them instead! AGHHHHHH Only buy if your a completist. Hopefully Megadeth will release another album sometime in the future with all of their rare tracks much in the vein of Hidden Treasures. We can only hope.

2.0 out of 5 stars Use the man indeed., September 19, 2002
Well, if you haven't figured it out by now, this isn't exactly a "new" Megadeth album. What it's supposed to be is unreleased tracks (throwaways?) from "Rude Awakening" and some tracks from "The World Needs a Hero".

The best of the live tracks is easily "Time/Use the Man", whose inclusion almost justifies buying this. Yes, I am a big Megadeth fan, have been for years. But, I bought this CD not knowing what songs were on it ... and was more than a little disapointed when I found out that half of the album are tracks from "The World Needs a Hero" which I had purchased days before.

That said, this is for die-hard fans only, and that's just for the unreleased tracks from "Rude Awakening". Save your money and buy "The World Needs a Hero", it's much better than this.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'll answer the question: NOT WELL. Not here, anyway., June 15, 2004

I'm a huge fan of Megadeth, and have been for a few years; I'd even go as far as saying I'm a completist (I own both the original AND the reissue of KILLING IS MY BUSINESS...). However, this is one Megadeth "album" that I will never waste my money on.

Even more absurd than most so-called "best-of" collections, STILL, ALIVE...AND WELL? is simply pointless. We have several tracks from one of the best albums from one of the best thrash acts ever, THE WORLD NEEDS A HERO, and two--count 'em, TWO--unreleased live tracks. Okay...why?

Indeed, I'll agree with other fans, this COULD have been another HIDDEN TREASURES, but instead it is a waste of money and time.

Trust me, just get THE WORLD NEEDS A HERO and as for the live tracks, you're not missing much. If they're THAT important to you, just look for them as downloads somewhere.

LUCKILY, Megadeth has re-formed, with a new bassist and drummer, and a suprising return of the almighty Chris Poland on guitars. Dave's arm is all better, and he's refreshed...and determined. NEW ALBUM COMING SOON!

Peace.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rehash, September 18, 2002
By
I've stuck with Megadeth ever since I was first introduced to them when they released Countdown to Extinction. I bought all their previous and future albums from then on. For me, they were considered the best heavy band ever in terms of consistency and pure art form. They were original all the way.

This changed somewhere along the lines of their break-up with Capitol. They released their first ever greatest hits album. They then did only one original album with their new label and started rehashing old material in the form of new, modified music, knowing full well that hard core fans would buy it. They released their first album, digitally remastered and then went on to produce their first live album, which consisted of old material. Lead singer, guitarist and founder of the band gets injured and without notice the whole band just dismatles to the surprise of all of us fans. For me that was a dark day in history. I was actually mourning the loss of a great metal band that had a great influence in the heavy metal world.

The release of this album justifies the downward spiral Megadeth has been going through for sometime now. What is it about producing an album filled with half live tracks and the other half of material already released in the studio? To make matters worse, only the first two songs of the live tracks are not included in RUDE AWAKENING. It just did not make any sense.

A number of people speculated that it was Megadeth's way to fulfill their contract with Sanctuary. If what I remember is true, then the band has signed in for 5 albums, one of which could be a compilation. Putting into consideration their double album, 4 albums have already been produced. That leaves them with just one more album before Megadeth goes away. Judging on what hass been happening these recent times, I don't think the modern band would be talked about much in the halls of metal.
This album is a mediocre and a disgrace to the Megadeth brand. I wouldn't buy it if I already owned RUDE AWAKENING or THE WORLD NEEDS A HERO.

Heck if you don't decide to buy, yer not missing days from work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Megadeth - 'Still Alive... And Well?' (Sanctuary Records), March 29, 2006
Since I've seen Megadeth perform live something like at least ten times over the years,I've pretty much gotten burned out on them.I'll still take out a CD of theirs time and again for a spin in my CD player.I thought that 'Still Alive...' is pretty much aimed toward the die-hard fans. It's got half live tracks, including "My Darkest Hour","Sweating Bullets","Symphony Of Destruction",the always nice to hear "Holy Wars"+ two more. Then you get six previously unreleased cuts.If you're a real big Megadeth fan, you'll obviously get more out of this CD than I did.Overall,it's decent.

2.0 out of 5 stars Where's your head Dave? (or Sanctuary...), October 4, 2002
With the ghost of the once mighty Megadeth hanging above the heavy metal world, Sanctuary Records has decided to release this compilation featuring two whole unreleased live tracks, a few other live songs from Megadeth's first domestic live album "Rude Awakening" which was released earlier this year, and six tracks from Megadeth's "World Needs a Hero" which was released last year. The two unreleased live tracks ("Time" and "The Conjuring") are worth a listen or two, and if this was priced quite a bit lower I could maybe warrant a purchase, but if you already own "World Needs a Hero" and "Rude Awakening" than there is absolutely no point in wasting money on this. I just hope that Megadeth will return someday so Sanctuary Records doesn't have to keep putting these types of compilations out just to fulfil a record contract.

1.0 out of 5 stars There just isn't an excuse for this...., October 1, 2002

Rob Miller (Welland, ON CANADA) - See all my reviews
When I first heard that Megadeth was releasing this "album", I thought,"Cool, a couple live tracks, and maybe some unreleased songs, b-sides, etc." Damn, was I ever wrong!!!
Megadeth basically [disappointed] us over with this one...six leftovers from the RUDE AWAKEING live album, and half of THE WORLD NEEDS A HERO, which was their last album! Let's face it, the only people still buying Megadeth albums are long-time die-hards, so chances are, anyone thinking of buying this album already owns TWNAH or RUDE AWAKEING. So why bother? There is no point.
I realize Dave Mustaine wants to make a buck, but c'mon!!!
I've bought all their albums over the last 15 years or so, I'm a longtime fan from when I was like 12 listening to PEACE SELLS...and I've never felt ripped off like this.
Save your money for something else...anything else!!!!
Cheap money grab / contract fulfillment I guess.....

1.0 out of 5 stars Why even bother?, September 18, 2002
Not worth the plastic it was pressed on. Come on Dave, I know you like to make a quick buck, but at least be realistic. The two whopping live tracks that are new you can probably find elsewhere. If anything, some live tracks of other stuff they have played in the past would've been good. 99 ways to die is an example, I've only ever heard once live. My recommendation is that if you are going to buy something, the Rude Awakening DVD is probably the route to go, since it has a mix of everything they've ever played.

1.0 out of 5 stars Contract fulfillment, pure and simple., September 11, 2002

So, singer Dave Mustaine 'injures his arm' in January, they release an abysmal live album mid March, then 2 weeks later decides to inform the public of his 'injury' and announce the disbandment of Megadeth.

5 months of silence, then the sudden announcement of this little "gem" comprised of 5 tracks that didn't make the cut on the aforementioned live album, and 5 already released tracks from their last studio album 'World Needs A Hero' - 5 tracks of a 12 track album recycled for this aborted release. Either they owed Sanctuary Records another release or Dave has resumed 'self medicating' himself. Either way avoid like the plague.
