Editorial Reviews

Taken from the same tour that produced Live and Dangerous , this 1977 recording from the Tower Theater in Philadelphia is like a fantastic sequel we didn't even see coming. They do the classics plus songs not found on any other live Lizzy album: Jailbreak; The Boys Are Back in Town; Cowboy Song; Opium Trail; Massacre; Me and the Boys , and more. Double-gatefold collectors' LP adds a bonus 7" single with two unreleased songs!

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 release from Thin Lizzy - We Miss Phil Lynott March 3, 2009
Format:Audio CD
This is a 4.5 star release from a 5-star band. This will please Lizzy fans for sure. I only wish Phil's bass was just a pinch louder in parts, and that the CD contained more than 11 tracks. Maybe that is all they played that night at the Tower Theatre, although surely by 1977, they were headlining (a year after "Jailbreak"), which would lead one to believe that more than 11 cuts were played by Phil and the boys that night.

The sound is pretty good, although you'll have to turn up your volume nob a bit on the stereo. This CD isn't overly compressed, which gives it an almost-analog vibe. I liked that. The cymbals don't hiss, but actually sound like real drum cymbals. Producer Glyn Johns (Faces, The Eagles, The Who) and Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham did a pretty good job remixing this release. Brian Robertson's guitar is down a bit in the mix, here and there, but it's never too distracting.
Fans should pick this up now. The fact that it doesn't contain any overdubs (the CD claims) is another plus. I only wish it was longer, songwise ... but it's worth the ten buckeroos ....

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Dangerous! April 4, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Great release, sound quality is top notch. First of all, this is the same show that you've heard on Wolfgangs Vault or however it's spelled. As Scott Gorham has said, it's the second Philadelphia show. Not the full show but still a kickass CD nonetheless. Here's why the full show is not on here. Note, the quality on this CD is much better than the full show that's online.

I'm curious as to why there are only 10 tracks. Having seen Lizzy so many times, the sets were typically not that short.

I'll tell you what happened there. When we found these tapes, I knew that a load of these multi-tracks were in danger of being destroyed. That's kind of why we went in and had to go through the baking -- getting these tapes baked so they could be put down to a digital format and the idea was to get maybe 15 songs on the actual CD itself, but two of the reels were destroyed ... it actually sounded like someone had put their finger on top of the spool or they were leaning against the machine or something, because it kept going with that "wrrrooow, wrrrooow" kind of a thing, and I kind of panicked because we were halfway through this mixing process and we slammed on those tapes and that came up and I thought, "This can't be happening!" There is nothing you can do at that stage, so what we got out of it were four new tracks so, you know, four is better than none!

Below is a breakdown of the album track by track:

1. Soldier Of Fortune 21/10/77
2. Jailbreak 21/10/77
3. Cowboy Song 20/10/77 KBFH show. Same take as Live and Dangerous.
4. Boys Are Back In Town 20/10/77 KBFH show. Same take as Live and Dangerous
5. Dancing In The Moonlight 20/10/77 KBFH show.

3.0 out of 5 stars Missing the rest of the show???? March 18, 2009
Format:Audio CD
Yes, it is disapointing that the rest of the show is missing which is at least 7 songs. [...] has had the full 17 songs posted for listening for quite some time. I was aware of this show awhile ago and listened to it on Wolfgangs site and was excited to hear this was being released but sad to see when it came out how edited it is. I am a huge LIZZY fan and bummed about missing almost half the show.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed March 4, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a die hard Lizzy Fan, I can't believe that they botched up another release. The whole show is not included and it is a combination of two shows that they played at the Tower Theater in Philly. The whole show can be heard on Wolfganes Vault in it's entirely and uncut. Five songs are excluded from this release and should be on there. I love Thin Lizzy and can't believe that they ruined this cd by not having the whole show.

3.0 out of 5 stars Whose hands were on the mixer? March 20, 2009
Format:Audio CD
This became about the 5th Lizzy Live CD I own. (Yes, I even was crazy enought to get the "Still Life".) Here's what you get with this one:
* Great performances -- on par, a few better than Live & Dangerous
* A couple of new, non L & D songs
* Excellent bass and drum sound / mixes
* Very low Brian Robertson and guitars in mix. This is painfully evident all through the disc, almost funny when the band is introduced. Like another review, you find youself turning the volume up on your stereo to "hear" the songs as you know them. Both guitars are a little low, but Robbo's was turned down like he had bad credit!.

This really hurts the CD. I hate to point the finger at Gorham, since he was involved in this release and mixing with Johns. And he seems like a nice-enough guy. But the levels make this CD hard to listen to, or play it more than a couple of times. If you're a hard-core Lizzy fan like me, buy Opium Trail (excellent version) and another of your favorite songs as downloads, and save you $$ for their other upcoming live album (compilation of all the guitarists) or the excellent L & D DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC BAND!! March 7, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Although there may be some tracks missing from this disc I still give it 5 stars because simply kicks all kinds of azz! Thin Lizzy are for me one of the great rock bands ever. I don't think they make 'em like this anymore and that's a shame. I loved it when Gary Moore was in the band but this is the classic Lizzy lineup in all its glory. The guitar work here is superb. Phil Lynott is in vintage form and let me not forget to mention the criminally underrated Brian Downey on drums. This disc just rocks, period! Phil Lynott may be gone but he will never be forgotten.

Thin Lizzy Still Dangerous .... pretty good recording
I have a boot of the show and it is scaled down for this CD. The full show is just over 80 minutes and I think is fabulous, considering a late '70's recording. I still pre-ordered this because I have to have everything Thin Lizzy. The UK Tour '75 was such a great surprise, wonder what else is... Read More
