Book Description

January 10, 1999
Not ready to give up this wonderful adventure, Thacker headed West. To escape the bitter cold gripping the US, she headed sown the Baja Pninsula, thinking she'd explore for a month and get warm. She stayed for almost 15 months, for she found a land and a people who appealed to her strongly. In spite of a language barrier at first, Barb grew to love her Mexican neighbors in Barrio San Ignacio, Todos Santos, where she lived in a palap. She shares some of the joys and grustrations of life in a different culture. It taught her that we are. indeed, all family.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I am not an armchair traveler, I prefer to go myself, but with Barbara's book, you don't have to be anything or go anywhere. Reading this book was as easy and enthralling as her first one. I could not put it down. I can explain it by saying: Barb sits with you enjoying a cup of cota tea and takes you there in a spiritual walkabout. She's a storyteller. Under her spell people and places come to life. The barrio was as real as my own neighborhood. I want to know more about these people, their lives, and their barrio. What happened to the children? To jorge and Elisa? To Hermalinda and Mirta? Has Todos Santos been ravished by tourism and fast food chains? Have people ceased to care about their neighbors? Do they have to lock their doors at night? Are palapas now prefab? Barb has to go back and tell us more. -- Dayl Pourraid, native of Argentina

I first met Barbara Thacker in March of l994, shorly after she and her dogs - Ink and Negro - had ventured alone for the second time down the Baja peninsula in a small Toyota camper which appeaed less than travelworthy. My first impression of Barbara was that of a womna comprised of equal parts of fearlessness and craziness. Such a description could be applied to most any other explorer in out history. I admire Barbara for her courage to venture out, on her own, to the ends of the continent. Barbara's stories, detailed and precious, allow us less adventurous types to experience the world without having to leave the comfort of our sofa. Godspeed Barbara. -- Jay P. Tharinger, The Observer Newspaper

I thought I was in the passanger seat. Reading Barb's book allowed me to take a trip without leaving home. If I were asked to discribe this book in three words, they would be: Descriptive, Inspriational, Touching. Barb, check the fluids and tires on Tessie. I'm ready for another trip or another book. -- Carl Silva, owner, THE BOOKMARK at Placitas

4.0 out of 5 stars I want an Ink!, September 8, 2003

This review is from: Still Going. . . Blissfully Lost in the Baja : Wandering South of the Border with Barb Thacker and Her Dog, Ink (Paperback)
This was a change of pace for Thacker from her previous 'terra circa' around North America. This book, her second in the trilogy, is shorter than the first yet the timespan is more than 3 times that of the first. Such is Mexico.

It was enjoyable to read of a Mexico which would seem, nowadays, to have ceased to exist. Indeed, in the epilogue, Barb mentions a second trip to the Baja 3 years later and the subsequent changes that had gone on.

A decent follow-up to her first novel.

I just hope she writes more books. Enjoyed this one so much I couldn't put it down. She puts you right there in Baja on the warm sand by the vivid blue sea. Her stories of her dog Ink add much to the pleasure of reading this cheerful book.

The only thing wrong with this book is it ends! I just wanted it to keep on going I enjoyed reading it so much. It really makes you feel like you are right there watching the whales sprout and the sun set over the brilliant blue green waters of Baja. Please Barb, keep writing!
