5.0 out of 5 stars STUNNING, November 29, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Still Life at Penguin Cafe [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This review is based on a Lazer Disc version of 'Still Life' at the Penguin Cafe, also issued in 1991. This disc comes on two sides (side 1 - 'Still Life' / side 2 - Penguin Cafe Orchestra 'A profile'), I don't know if that is the same format as the VHS tape.
If you like the music of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra you'll love this. Apart from the great music you get to see the Royal Ballet in action. Their costumes are wonderful, especially the zebra. The music on the 'Still life' side of the Disc is performed by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Side 2 is performed the Penguin Cafe Orchestra themselves.
I hope it will be released on DVD!

5.0 out of 5 stars perfection, December 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Still Life at Penguin Cafe [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of the loveliest music and dance videos we have come across . We bought it some years ago and have shared it with family and friends - our tiniest grandchildren and teenage grandchildren adore it , our ballet friends love it , and the message regarding conservation is timely .Please urge a re-release .

5.0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding and Beautiful, April 9, 2002
This review is from: Still Life at Penguin Cafe [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of my all time favorite pieces of art. The music is tuneful and engaging, the dancing is humorous and stimulating, and the costumes a treat. This is a very rare item, and I encourage you to get it before it disappears. I saw it originally on TV (Bravo or A&E) and was utterly hypnotized while I was watching it. I saw it a second time, and it was even better. It even has a gentle message about the environment. The only downside is that it is not longer :-(

5.0 out of 5 stars As a Music Teacher/Musician/Dancer/Theater Person, December 27, 2004
By
This review is from: Still Life at Penguin Cafe [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Superb for viewers of any age. A challenge to you: the Great Auk masks are transfered from one dancer to another in the second segment. When? Can you spot it? Watch the surreptitious set-change in the Longhorn Ram segment, and note the similarity between that costume/mask and Mycenaean goddess statues from ancient Greece. Morris dancers in flea segment. Zebra segment so powerful it defies words. Final scene extremely gripping. Please: buy it, share it, teach with it, and relish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent choregraphy of unusual music set to a modern theme, May 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Still Life at Penguin Cafe [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A superb exhibition of a current theme supported with infecting music danced by top-of-the-world ballet professionals. The contrast between the training of the modern dance artist and of the ballet artist can be readily be discerned. This title should be available forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic intertwining of human and animal in dance&music, February 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Still Life at Penguin Cafe [VHS] (VHS Tape)
One othe most original dance pieces I have seen with the hypnotic music of the Penquin Cafe orchestra beautifully realised by the Royal Ballet Company.I am afraid purple prose is the only answer to this one "breathtakingly beautiful " Original dance and constructive and serious choreography at this level is hard to find . please re-release the video"

5.0 out of 5 stars Each person needs 3 copies at any one time, July 19, 2006
By
This review is from: Still Life at Penguin Cafe [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The subject matter is thoughtful and topical, the dancing unbelievably beautiful and original, and words cannot describe some of the costumes. The zebra piece is an unforgettable experience. I would actually like to rate it 6 out of 5 stars. This collection of music and choreography is so mesmerising that even people who normally dislike ballet can't stop looking at it. I have lent my copy of the video to so many people that eventually it has not returned, I have not seen it for the past 5 years. One needs a DVD to keep in a safe place to be regulary enjoyed, one to lend to friends and relatives and others whose horizons could benefit with expanding, and one for just in case of accidents with one of the others. I along with others reviewing this item, can't wait for it to be reissued on DVD.
