4.0 out of 5 stars On his way to perfection..., June 19, 2002

This review is from: Still Life (Audio CD)
After seeing the film Presque Rien I had no choice but to seek out the songs featured in it. They astounded me. Simple arrangements on top of simple vocals and simple harmonies. The combination of all these simplicities creates something absolutey spectacular. In the two songs featured on his "Still Life" album, the songs are tragic murmurings from the grave of Nick Drake. The songs "Wise Mans Blues" and "This Time It's Goodbye" are miracles alone, each of them. What's more miraculous is they are both on one cd and composed of the same man. Blake is stripped of any kind of armor on this. He allows himself to be totally exposed. His voice is fragile and unaffected. It stirs like a violin. Like a lonely violin in the greatest, most empty hall. He just opens his mouth and I believe him, every word. Listening to his music is like bearing witness to his personal monolouge, uttered just above his breath. If I were going to catagorize him, which I wouldn't, I would categorize him as a male version of Stina Nordenstam. The "electronica" thing attatched to something I read about him scared me off a little, but he's just a musician. I wouldn't really pin him down to any particular genre. He just makes music. And it is beautiful. If you're looking for a honest voice out there... his will rip your heartstrings apart in the most beautiful, beautiful way you never thought possible.

His first album was magnificent but this one is even better! Every song is a small masterpiece. One of the best albums I own. So deep and powerful from the first till the last song. And what a voice!

Haunting, thought proviking, cerebral... there really aren't enough words to describe this wonderful music. If you've ever wondered about the meaning of life, this is it - set to music.

5.0 out of 5 stars David Sylvian would be proud!, April 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Still Life (Audio CD)
Perry Blake offers up beautiful music in the vein of David Sylvian Not sense Sylvians "Secrets of the Beehive" has anyone been able to pull off an album of beauty and perfection like unto this one. Often singing in a falsetto that would break anyones heart Perry relates tales of lost childhood and love while backed by orchestration that is flawless, never drowning out just how fragile these songs in fact are. If you like David Sylvian do yourself a favor and check out this wonderfully haunting cd by a new and brilliant artist (also get Perry's self titled debut if you can find it)

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Life- The Album Of My Life., May 9, 2004
This review is from: Still Life (Audio CD)
When I listenned to Still Life for the first time, I was still recovering from the powerful effects Perry Blakes`s first album, had had on me; that first album overwhelmed me, and I fell in love with Perry`s voice, melancholic lyrics and melody, so I was eager to listen to his new album...
I entered in a music store, and some beautiful, beautiful song was playing, the voice was breathtaking, it was a familiar voice; I asked what was that song, that artist they were playing, and the answer was Perry Blake, new album.
I rushed my pace, ran all over the store to find the cd, I finally found it, and started listenning to it; my God, I was overwhelmed once again, song by song, I fell in love with every song, specially No Lullabies, fell even deeper... my heart was pumping so fast, but I felt so in peace...
Until this day, Still Life overwhelmes me every time I listen to it; my God, the lyrics, the breathtaking voice, the ravishing melodies, this is pure art and beauty, this is a part of me.
Still Life is the album of my life, somehow I know it will always be...

4.0 out of 5 stars Another gem from Blake, February 10, 2011
This review is from: Still Life (Audio CD)
More excellent, intelligent, melodic pop from Perry Blake. As with his other work, once I start listening I cannot stop. Why is this man not more well-known? He should be. If you like Mark Hollis (Talk Talk), David Sylvian, Nick Drake, The Blue Nile, or even Robert Wyatt (check out "War in France") you'll find Blake is right up your alley. Although not quite up to the classic status of the live "Broken Statues," this is wonderful, sublime stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of an album, December 30, 2008
This review is from: Still Life (MP3 Download)
I only discovered this album recently. I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed something so much as Perry Blake's "Still Life". Each and every song is a miniature masterpiece. I am totally in love with it.

Not to be missed (even 9 years after its first release).
