Editorial Reviews

Review

 “Wonderful.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer

Still Life in Photography succeeds both as a historical document, scholarly and accessible, and as a portfolio of impressive images.”—The Bloomsbury Review

From the Author

Part of a medium format series of thematic books that survey the Getty Museum's collection of photographs, Still Life in Photography features 80 plates along with a brief, but insightful essay intended to introduce the reader to the major aesthetic and technical developments that have shaped the genre.

More About the Author

A leading curator in the field of art photography, Paul Martineau is associate curator of photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. He received a B.A. in art from the University of Massachusetts at Boston and a M.A. in art history from Williams College. Before joining the Getty Museum in 2003, he held positions at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. Mr. Martineau has organized numerous exhibitions at the Getty, covering a diverse range of topics that span the mid-19th century to the 21st century. He is currently collaborating with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on an ambitious publication and exhibition project on the photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe; and his next book, "The Thrill of the Chase: The Wagstaff Collection of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum," is expected to be released in early 2016.

Format: Hardcover
Martineau's essay provides a brief, but informative overview of the history of still life in photography along with a number of comparative examples that show the relationship between painting and photography. There are very few books that address this subject matter and I recommend it as a thoughtful and well illustrated introduction to the topic.

A beautifully presented book, very interesting and well-researched, informative text. Great choice of images - a really good addition to the library, either for historians, photographers, visual artists.

Format: Hardcover
A fantastic book for reference and for fun! The compact size belies the contents: a prudently curated assembly of exciting works of still life from the history of photography. My favorites -some that I had never seen before- come from the 1930s. These are not Cezanne's still lifes! As an Art History student as well as an art educator (living far from the Getty Museum) I rely on museum-published books like this that are able to pack a lot of information into a format that is a) portable and b) offers a fresh perspective on the subject. You'll be glad you bought it.
