The story of Julia and Gabriel continues in MUSE: a Still Life companion!

Hovering between dreamy romance and cruel reality, STILL LIFE is a contemporary tale of one woman's debilitating heartbreak and her desire to heal a life she no longer recognizes. At a little under 200 pages, it's a perfect read for overwhelmed moms, corporate commuters, and beach bums.

5.0 out of 5 stars The art of words, March 22, 2010

This review is from: Still Life (Paperback)
"Still life(noun): a picture consisting predominantly of inanimate objects."

Technically, that's the first line of this novel. I don't normally like it when an author hands me the definition of a pretty common word or idea, but this time, it works. Jodi LaPalm not only captures the inanimate objects of Julia's everyday life, she also entangles the feeling of suddenly becoming an inanimate object after her husband's death.

While it's not a long novel (173 pages cover to cover) it's also not an "easy" read. This story hits hard emotionally without even trying. I found myself tearing up alongside Julia and Blake, even when Julia wasn't weepy. I was also caught off-guard and frightened and then relieved with the rest of the characters.

Yes, it's a fiction story. But the situations can easily be linked to reality. Still life, by definition is just stuff; stuff that doesn't move. Still Life by Jodi LaPalm doesn't try to redefine it. What she creates for her readers is the understanding that while "stuff" may stay the same or change so drastically that it's not recognizable, in the end, it's still.....life.

The first chapter sucked me in...I had to know what happened next! I read it straight through. Beautifully written, great story-line. I felt like I was living the story as I read it...very good book!

5.0 out of 5 stars beautifully written, January 9, 2012

One of the best books I've read recently. It is beautifully written. I wasn't sure I wanted to read it at first because of the situation the main character was in at the beginning of the book; so heart breaking and sad. But I'm glad I did. It's a very touching story of how she begins to live again after tragedy.

More About the Author

JODI LAPALM is a stay-at-home mother by day and an author of fiction by night.

Following a decade of administrative work, she fled the Real World to acquire a degree in her first love English. To appease her other crush, Jodi minored in Human Development which might possibly explain why she often explores psychological turmoil within her main characters. Her stories highlight contemporary women faced with overwhelming hurdles and follow their struggles to overcome the complexities of self, family, love, and daily life.

Somewhere in the craze of volunteering, sick days, school events, play-dates, household duties, social networking, and the many joys that come with being wife and mother, she continues to find time to write. In her carefree moments, Jodi attempts to teach herself new things, organize a too-tidy home, travel with her boys, and savor the rare, kid-free night out with fellow moms.

She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband and son.
