Book Description

November 15, 2012
In December 2011, Lauren (“LoLo”) Scruggs, a 23-year-old fashion journalist, suffered a sudden injury that made headlines around the world. She had been on a short flight to look at Christmas lights and, upon exiting the small plane, was hit by the still-moving propeller blade. A frantic 911 call, several major surgeries, and thousands of prayers later: Lauren lived. But she lost her left hand and left eye. And she had to face some incredibly difficult questions: What kind of future will I have? Where is God in all this pain? Will anyone ever be able to love me now? In Still LoLo, Lauren speaks out for the first time since her accident. She and her family reveal what really happened that night, what Lauren’s life is like today, what got them through their journey toward healing, and how they conquered all odds to persevere as a family. It’s a compelling and fiercely beautiful story of faith, determination, and staying true to who you are—no matter what.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Join Lauren Scruggs as she reveals the story of the night that changed everything for her. . . .

“The night was dark and rainy. Shadowy clouds were thick above us in a starless sky. For some reason I began to feel cold. The heater was on in the tiny plane, but what I felt wasn’t that type of cold. It was more of a tingle. A shiver. I took a deep breath and looked out the window.

‘Nice lights,’ the pilot said.

The feeling shot up my spine again. Unmistakable fear. This is stupid, I thought. Completely stupid. Not the experience of flying but this definite feeling of dread coursing through my body. Get a grip, Lo, I told myself. You need to relax.

Up in the air, the atmosphere grew calmer. The rain let up and turned into a slight mist. It might have even stopped. There was no thunder or lightning. No strong winds. All I heard was the friendly drone of the plane’s engine and the occasional crackle over the microphone’s earpiece. But I still couldn’t shake this crazy fear.

I couldn’t shake it at all.”

From the Back Cover

A stunning and unexpected tale of tragedy, survival, and true beauty
For fashion journalist Lauren (“LoLo”) Scruggs, a short flight to look at Christmas lights turned into a nightmare when she was struck by the plane’s spinning propeller blades.

As Lauren was rushed to the hospital, fighting for her life, the world watched in shock and horror. Several major surgeries and thousands of prayers later, Lauren was still alive. But she had suffered brain trauma and lost her left hand and left eye. Some thought that this would be the end of everything for her, a beautiful young woman working in an industry focused completely on appearance.

They were wrong.

In Still LoLo, Lauren reveals what really happened that night, how she survived against all odds, and what her life is like today. She is unflinchingly honest in the face of difficult questions: What kind of future will I have? Will anyone be able to love me now? Where is God in all this pain? Through her story, Lauren calls us all to live a life without fear and to overcome whatever challenges threaten to limit us.

Containing never-before-published photos and personal stories from Lauren and her family, Still LoLo is a compelling and fiercely beautiful account of faith, determination, and staying true to who you are—no matter what.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good, inspiring read, even for non-Christians November 23, 2012

I bought this book somewhat reluctantly, worried that it would be too preachy for me to enjoy or relate to. I was pleasantly surprised to find that, while there is a good deal of discussion about Lauren's faith and the Scrugg's family's faith, it is not a preachy book. It was inspiring on many levels: the story of Lauren's parents and how they came back together after seven years of being divorced (a divorce that was pretty bitter to begin with) and the story of how the community pulled together to help the family through this crisis were great subplots and inspiring on their own. You definitely feel that Lauren has a "young" or immature voice -- there is a lot of description about people's looks, dress, etc., but she also recognizes in the end that outward appearance was something she placed too much value on. She doesn't try to make herself out to be perfect, and she lets the reader in on the struggles she endured, including lashing out at her parents during her darker times. I read this in about a day and I enjoyed it more than I expected to. There is even a good description of the accident and how it could have happened to anyone, for those who still think Lauren was just a dumb blonde who should have missed the spinning propeller.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good story, poor book January 20, 2013
By ErikaL
Format:Hardcover
Certainly the faith and courage of Lauren and her family in response to this horrible accident are admirable. However, the book seems self-absorbed and self-indulgent. The introductory material about her young life and the marital problems of her parents is unnecessary and seems like a plug for their own book and "ministry". Lauren's details about what outfits she wore and what boys she kissed are also unnecessary and immature. Overall there are too many details, seemingly there to create enough pages to justify a book. Perhaps it would have been better for Lauren and her family to wait a couple of years to tell the story, rather than publishing it so soon after the accident. The long-term recovery and faith journey would be more inspiring than paragraph after paragraph of details about clothes, food, and lifestyle. The book, on its own, has no literary quality or value.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Young Woman December 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book skims on the horror experienced by Lauren and her family. There was definitely areas in the book that could have gone into more depth post accident. That being said Lauren is a true inspiration and I recommend this book for people to learn how to overcome adversity. In some points I found there to be too much emphasis on religion, to the point of being lectured. However, if this is where Lauren and her family drew their strength from all be it.
