About the Author

Deborah Hughes was a normal kid living a normal life when she moved into a haunted house at the age of seven. Suddenly she was sharing space with dead people and experiencing the bizarre world of the unknown and the uncanny. An over-active imagination did not, at first, serve her well for she feared what she did not understand. Learning to read opened her to the world of books and she read everything she could find about supernatural and paranormal phenomena. The more she read, the more she learned and the more she realized how little she knew. This has led to a lifelong search for knowledge, truth and enlightenment. Constantly inspired to write, from the age of eight she began telling the stories streaming like movies through her mind. Although determined to grow up and become a writer, her sense of adventure led to a career in the United States Air Force. Despite a busy and demanding life, Deborah continued writing the stories that came to her in flashes of inspiration and her quest for knowledge continued. Her military career now behind her, she is focused on her lifelong dream of being an author and sharing the stories she’s been so compelled to write. Deborah would welcome any comments or questions you may have, feel free to email her at deborah.hughes@rocketmail.com or visit her blog at www.deborahjhughes.com

At the tender age of seven, Deborah Hughes moved into a haunted old farmhouse with her family. Sharing a home with dead people is sure to put a new perspective on things and once she was old enough to read, she devoured book after book in the hopes of gaining some understanding of what she and her family had gone through. But the more she learned, the more she realized how little she knew. This realization has led to a lifelong exploration of the paranormal world.

Although determined to grow up and become an author, her sense of adventure led to a career in the United States Air Force. Instead of making books she was making bombs, not quite what she expected to do with her life but she certainly experienced an adventure.

Despite her busy life and demanding career, Deborah continued writing the stories filling her head and demanding to be told. It's a calling no writer can ignore.

Now, with her military career behind her, she is finally focused on doing what she loves most...writing the kinds of stories she loves to read. Stories that involve her interests in the paranormal, the supernatural and the spiritual (though she does like to throw in some romance if it can be worked in!).

She hopes her readers enjoy her stories as much as she enjoys writing them, and along with that, she LOVES hearing from them! Aside from writing and reading, talking to other writers and readers is a favorite activity for her! Check out her blog, her Facebook and/or her Twitter pages if you are interested in connecting with her! If you have questions about her books, stories of your own to share, or would just like to make a new friend, she's waiting to hear from you!

This novel has a compelling and suspenseful plot, and the writer has a nice feel for location and region. This should develop into a strong series anchored by a protagonist with a provocative gift.

While reading this book, I was hooked. The story draws you in and makes you feel as if you are there. The characters and storyline are well written. This is a book for romance, paranormal and mystery lovers alike. Even if you have never read a paranormal or ghost story, I strongly recommend you give this book a try. You will not regret it!!

I was hooked from page one. This book is very Gothic. Very mysterious. Very intriguing. Will Tess ever reconnect with her dead husband? What restless spirits haunt the Maine resort? I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good Gothic romance, a spooky read, well-developed suspense, sympathetic characters, and a satisfying resolution. Can't wait for Deborah Hughes' next book.

Not a great book - kind of preachy, at times sappy, and the ending is a bit muddled, but hey - its been raining alot and its always good to have something to read right? I think the writer has potential, and I probably will read more from her in the future to see if that is the case.

***SPOILERS***
I love a good ghost story with some romance. What I didn't expect was the references to God throughout the book (much more in the beginning). The other thing that put me off was the idea that people who die by an accident actually chose that path. That may be the case for someone who is terminally ill or depressed, but a healthy male in his late 30's, happy and goes out to the store to pick up sour cream wanted to be hit head-on by a drunk driver. I think the story had potential if the author left out her religious musings. So for that, I'll give it 2 stars. I just wish there were tags mentioning the true content of this book.

I loved this book! I normally do not read books about mediums or ghosts, but gave it a try based on a recommendation. I have a very dear friend who is sensitive to spirits but I always took her gift for granted and never really tried to understand it. Ms. Hughes did such a great job of explaining the why and how of being a medium that I have a whole new respect for my friend. The book has great characters and visuals and the plot was very engaging--and a great surprise ending! The description of the resort was so good that I went online to see if really existed (it doesn't). I can definitely see a sequel coming! I highly recommend Ms. Hughes' book!

I bought this on a whim. I heard the subject and it sounded like something I would like--and I was not disappointed. I very much like the heroine created by Hughes. She was believable, strong and admirable. The love stories are sweet and compelling in this novel (the story of the heroine and her lost love and new love, along with the lovers on the "other side"). The topic of "medium solved mystery" was intriguing. I haven't seen the t.v. shows with this topic but while I wait for Hughes next book, I will be looking for them on Netflix.

This is about Tess, a woman/medium who visits a haunted retreat after her husband dies, and finds herself embroiled in the mystery of a female spirit who cries in the night. The place is a bed/breakfast type resort where she thought she could go to get away from her grief and memories. She meets some interesting people there who find her interesting as well, because she seems to be able to communicate with the dead. For many years the owners of the resort and many of their guests have felt the place was haunted. Some of the guests are attracted by the theory of ghosts at the establishment, but most that encounter the cries of despair in the night, are disturbed by it. The owners want normalcy, and want Tess to help them achieve it.

This had potential. I found it enjoyable initially but it just dragged on too long. I've been reading it for weeks now, and have strayed away to read other things, then come back to it. I hate to give up on a book, but this could've and should've been shorter.
