Journey to the Top
Lucado was born in 1955 in San Angelo, Texas, and raised in Andrews, Texas, the youngest of four children. His father was an Exxon oil field mechanic who, Lucado remembers, always smelled of grease cleaner. "It makes it easy for me to see a God who is loving and kind--because my dad was," he says. His mother was a nurse who grew up working in the cotton fields.

Lucado went through a period of rebellion against his parents' values and their God during his teens and into college. But it wasn't long before he found himself drawn back to his roots, back to God. He married, spent time serving as a missionary in Brazil, and returned to the States, where he began working as a church minister and writing on the side.

Secret to Success
From all accounts, Max Lucado is not a man consumed by sales, awards, and achievements. He often turns down media interviews since they impede on family and ministry commitments. He spends the bulk of his week serving as senior minister at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. And he is truly surprised by his own success--more impressed by his one-in-a-million wife and three amazing daughters than by his successful writing career.

Max Lucado has become one of the most read Christian writers because of his encouraging books and this one is no exception!

The theme of this book is to show how God moved during biblical times and encouragement for the reader to realize and believe that the same God is still at work today.

Some of the subjects covered by Lucado include:

1. Overcoming shame.
2. Facing discouragement.
3. How to love growing old.
4. When others let you down.
5. When you are out of choices.
6. When you're trapped by legalism.
7. When you wonder if God cares.
8. When you are afraid of the future.

There are a total of 21 such subjects and Lucado addresses them like only he can - by describing a biblical example, how Jesus addressed the issue, and how you can have hope for today.

God is not silent, He still works in the lives of believers! Read the book and be encouraged to hang in there when things get tough. God is for us, not against us!

A friend at church loaned me this book. This book has left me feeling so small and unworthy of such a wonderful God. Since I became a Christian,two years ago in August 1997, God has performed several miracles in my life, one being healing my lungs to the extent that I no longer require supplemental oxygen twenty four hours a day. I had been oxygen dependant for over eleven years and now only require it in emergencies. I praise the Lord for this miracle and all the others He continues to show me. I literally shook as I read Maxs' book, because I am a living testament to the healing powers Max refers to of our Lord Jesus Christ. May the Lord continue to bless Max Lucado with word to touch other souls so they too may know, God IS still with us. We need only to seek Him. HE WILL ANSWER!

This is a most powerful and empowering book. Max Lucado, a spiritual writer, refers to the way Christ moves the stones (obstacles) in your path with this title. Such relevant issues include feeling shame for past behaviors, when others let us down, facing discouragement, having a bad attitude and my personal favorite dealing with difficult relatives. Lucado who often writes with a whimsical format, wrote this book more on a pensive level although not critical. He even has a chapter he calls "Listless Christianity". My favorite quote in the book is "Faith sometimes begins by stuffing your ears with cotton". Meaning you have to ignore those who tell you that you aren't smart enough, not strong enough, not pretty enough, not tall enough, etc. to achieve your goals. After you have finished the text, there are study guides for you to review at your own pace. These study guides will provide the opportunity for you to apply what you have learned to your individual situation.
