5.0 out of 5 stars A CD for All, June 15, 2000
By
This review is from: In the Still of the Night (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD after hearing George Dvorsky perform live. His voice is fantastic. It is so warm and smooth. He has chosen songs that fit his voice perfectly. The orchestration matches the excellence in the rest of the CD.

The musical selections are old standards but I never got the impression I was just listening to songs I had heard many times before. Each sonf was fresh. I did spend much of my time listening trying to remember in what movies the songs appeared.

The first time I listened to the CD I made the mistake of playing it in the car. All I wanted to do was pull over to the side of the road and listen. I recommend this CD to anyone who likes to listen to great music. It is great music to play to relax or as backgound music during dinner or cocktails.

A coworker and my mother have both listened to the CD. They will both have copies of their own by now. I will be purchasing two more copies. That way I will have a copy for each of my CD players.

5.0 out of 5 stars In The Still of the Night... Steamy, sultry, and satisfying, June 9, 2000
This review is from: In the Still of the Night (Audio CD)
This is not a typical recording for a Broadway actor and vocalist. It is, rather, a beautifully arranged collection of classics, that will both soothe and enrapture the listener. From the inviting opening track, "Night and Day" to the sultry closing track, "In The Still of The Night", George Dvorsky will hold your attention. Having a strong baritone range, Mr. Dvorsky takes "I Love Paris" to a new depth and gives it a refreshing contemporary sound. "Allez-Vous-En" can easily be described as vocal seduction, having all the tenderness of a gentle kiss on the back of a hand. The entire CD is filled with the type of sound that embraces and captivates. This version of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" proves that Mr. Dvorsky is capable of keeping romantic music alive in a contemporary environment. I finally understand my mother's reaction to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin! That magical spell they cast back in her era, is alive and well for the modern listener. And it is even more powerful and enjoyable in this millennium, thanks to Mr. Dvorsky's exquisite vocals and the beautiful arrangements on this CD. So, turn the lights down, kick off your shoes, shut your eyes, and listen...and be seduced by In The Still of the Night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dvorsky Shines Again!, June 10, 2000
This review is from: In the Still of the Night (Audio CD)
Gorgeous! Divine! George Dvorsky's voice shines in this Kern/ Porter compilation. His rich, velvety voice is showcased quite well. On this album, Dvorsky sings a great variety of music, from slow and jazzy to quick and snappy. The first thing of note is the fact that the entire album is incredibly conversational. One feels as though she's being given a private concert when she listens to this album, although Dvorsky is singing directly to her. The closeness is a very powerful element to this album. In fact, it's nearly impossible to explain. He's got an amazing way of interpreting lyrics. This is one of the first albums I've owned where I've actually listened to every word. Some of the songs I'd heard before, but his take on the words made me think of the songs in a different way. Maybe it's the enthusiasm with which he approaches every song. He sounds as though he's really having a great time singing each piece. Every one of them has it's own personality, which makes it all the more fun to listen to. The easiest way to describe what he accomplishes on this album is the creation of a character. It's almost as if he has created a few different characters who make appearances on this CD one is dashing and debonair, and another is playful and quick-witted. You can spot them in the subtle shifts in tone. For example, his "gentleman" character is evident in "You Were Never Lovelier," and he comes up again in the slow, low and jazzy rendition of "It's All Right With Me," which makes one hang on every syllable. The playful character shows himself in "Let's Begin." In some cases, Dvorsky uses them both at once. One of my favorite examples of this is "Just One of Those Things." One of the real treats in this CD is his control over his voice. He sings in a wide range... the lower notes are full and nearly growled in some cases. However, he also soars up to higher notes and they are soft and polished. In addition to his range, his dynamics add to the appeal. One minute the notes are whisper-quiet and the next the music swells to a grand crescendo. It's impossible to do this CD a justice in words. I also love his phrasing. His timing is wonderful also. There's something about the places he puts the pauses, and the beats that just add another dimension to these songs. If you need something to convince you, take a listen to "Alles Vous En." Between the rich tone, dramatic pauses and the overall fluidity of the song is incredible. This is my favorite one on the whole disc. So do yourself a favor... grab this CD, pop it in the player, light some candles and join George Dvorsky IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT.
