4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable '70's pop/rock
I first caught on to this band in the early '80's when I heard the songs "Dance With Me" and "Still The One" on adult contemporary radio. While that radio format couldn't be more tired, those two classic songs certainly are not. "Still The One" is in fact one of the most semtimental and yet rocking songs of this genre of music--clearly the best song on this collection...

3.0 out of 5 stars I am BuMMMed out
I bought Orleans two album best of "Still the One" and all the songs from Orleans first album are on it except "Bum." You know... I'm a B.U.M. bum bum shadobewoweeee.

This is not the first time! Careless is out of print. The record company wants you to buy: On And On: The Hits Of Stephen Bishop, but it just doesn't feel the same. Record companies:...

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable '70's pop/rock, August 9, 2001
This review is from: Still the One (Audio CD)
I first caught on to this band in the early '80's when I heard the songs "Dance With Me" and "Still The One" on adult contemporary radio. While that radio format couldn't be more tired, those two classic songs certainly are not. "Still The One" is in fact one of the most semtimental and yet rocking songs of this genre of music--clearly the best song on this collection. However, there is plenty else to listen to here. Such songs as "Reach", "Let There Be Music", and "Fresh Wind" remind me a little of the pre-Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers. Other tracks, such as "What I Need" are a bit on the funky side. A few of the tracks are a bit slow and not that memorable. Overall, a very enjoyable listen. The two big hits alone--which as others have mentioned are the album versions--make this collection worth buying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Light Rock, November 10, 2004
This review is from: Still the One (Audio CD)
Sometimes, I supplement my CD/Tape Collection of Smooth Jazz, R&B & Quiet Storm sounds with some good quality light rock. Music like this often gets overlooked.

The tracks on this CD are most (but not all) of the songs which made up 2 of Orleans' albums. The music is a very pleasant blend of rock, pop, light country with some mild R&B sounds included in the mix. The music is very easy on the ears & may be just a little too smooth for some people.

The 2 big hits are "Still The One" & "Dance With Me" which are 2 of the 70's better songs that still sound nice today. "Reach" has a bit of a country feel to it & though I am not a country fan it is also an appealing song.

The jazzy "Spring Fever" is a treat. It was an FM radio staple in the 70's. "Waking & Dreaming" is an interestingly arranged number which goes through several tempo changes & has nice harmonies.

"If I Don't Have You", "Give One Heart" & "Sails" are all nice ballads.

Some of the lyrics sound a little stilted like "Your Life My Friend" or "What I Need" but are basically harmless.

This music holds a definite place in my heart ( & probably the hearts of others) along with such artists as Gerry Rafferty, Little River Band, Kenny Loggins, Paul Davis & a few other Light Rock artists of the 70s.

My one criticism is of the awful cover photo of "Waking & Dreaming"! The guys should have left their shirts on! What were they thinking? Oh yeah, it was the 70's!

Anyway, enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music from 2 albums, January 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Still the One (Audio CD)
Great compilation of 2 Orleans releases (their 2nd and 3rd albums). Powerful songwriting, incredible vocal harmonies, dynamic guitar work-very melodic, includes double soloing. Orleans was a dazzling live bar band in Ithaca NY at the Salty Dog in the early 70's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! But..., January 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Still the One (Audio CD)
The band is great and so are the songs. John Hall plays lots of guitar and that for me is the mark of this band. Of course the vocals are top notch. But... one must realize that this package is not the 2 full albums, "Waking and Dream" and "Let There Be Music". The 16 songs are a selection and a re-order of the original 20 songs from both records. I think showing both album cover photos on the cover implies that you get both records. Beware!

It's difficult to say that you will like this music if you have never hear Orleans before. Even in their time, I never bought an album from any of the groups they are compared too. However, after seeing them open for Bonnie Raitt in the 70's, I have always appreciated Orleans. Great guitar, harmonies and hooks. It's fair to say the music is pop & middle of the road, but, at least for me, it doesn't mean it can't be good.

I remember hearing this song when it first came out (I think I was about 9). I loved it. I heard it on the radio the other day and ended up buying the CD. I can't listen to "Still the One" loud enough. I put my stereo on volume 6, my house is rock'n, widows shak'n, dishes falling in the sink. Love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A talent powerhouse!, August 6, 2000

I had the priveledge of hearing these guys in Colorado a couple of years ago and I was highly impressed! I was a fan of their AM radio tune "Dance with me" which reminded me of the 70's and my high school crush. Wow, it is funny how music can stimulate memories, good and bad. This album has all of the great sounds that these very talented musicians created through the years. They are the quentissential 70's sound and they really ROCKED live! I hope they might come my way again someday. Thanks for signing the CD guys!!
