This newest release by Hendrickson-Smith is evidence of a continuing ascent for the young saxophonist. I shut my eyes while listening and felt like I was in the club at the performance. Hendrickson-Smith oozes of even more expressiveness and character in his playing than he did on his previous release. I'm so impressed with his melodic sensibilities, sublime execution and phrasing. At times, he reminds me of what Hank Mobley might sound like on alto sax, although I'm hesitant to squelch what is his unique approach to the instrument and the music. He hits a home run with this set, and surrounds himself with an incredible supporting cast. It's definitely going to be in my listening rotation for a great deal of time. If you like the essence of hard bop with a bluesy yet contemporary approach, then you're sure to enjoy this CD.
