Having never heard of Big Joe and the Dynaflows before, this CD was something of a revelation to me. This is swinging music, with the emphasis firmly on 'swing'. The main models here are the small jive outfits that emerged just after World War II, especially the likes of Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five, and the music of Lionel Hampton. Other influences are the New Orleans sounds produced by Dave Bartholomew and Smiley Lewis. The latter's 'One Night of Sin' is included here in its original form, as it was before being cleaned up to provide Elvis Presley with a hit as 'One Night'. Cover versions of songs associated with B.B. King, Percy Mayfield, Little Milton, Roscoe Gordon and Ray Charles also appear, together with four originals by Big Joe himself.

Washington, DC-based Big Joe Maher has assembled an amazing band. The lead guitarist, Alex Schultz, is an excellent player who previously spent years on the road with Rod Piazza. Saxman Mark 'Kaz' Kazanoff blows in that wailing, soulful style of the great tenors of the '40s and '50s, with Joe Stanley joining him on some tracks. Their sound is augmented by piano, acoustic bass, trumpet and trombone, with Big Joe on drums and vocals. Together they swing like the clappers, really capturing the spirit of the early post-war R&B outfits, and it's good to hear this music in the fullness of sound which modern recording techniques permit.

A most enjoyable performance, with plenty of variety between the numbers, and the talents of the individual musicians shining through the swinging ensemble work. If this release doesn't make them better known, it's hard to say what will. Thoroughly recommended to all lovers of jivey R&B.
